40lb bags average burn times?

I have a friend in the Toledo Ohio area that is looking getting a pellet insert/stove to heat his New 1500 sqft well insulated ranch home.

Here is the question, What type of burn times or how long does a 40lb bag of pellets generally last during the Shoulder season & the Winter Months?

Hard to give times for this, as every stove burns at different rates, plus heat settings will all be different.

Not looking for exact burn times or pellet use just some averages...... 40lbs per day? every 2 days?

I have a 2000sf 2 story house and my M55 burns exactly 3.5lbs/hr on heat level 3 (medium). When I did the test, my downstairs was 85F, outside temps were in the low 30s and upstairs was 72F. At that rate I would burn 2 bags a day running 24/7. I would only have to do that if the temps got down below 0F. So realistically in the coldest part of winter where temps are between 38F for a hi and 25 for a low, I usually burn somewhere between a bag and 1.5 bags per day and that's keeping the downstairs about 77-80F. We like it HOT!

I'd guess that on a low setting (heat level 2,3), that stove will probably burn for 2 days or so. Best bet for info is to either call Englander Tech line and ask them how many pounds per hour for each heat setting, or give Mike Holton a shout by "conversations". (stoveguy2esw)

I range from about 6 days per bag when I only need to nip the chill off(shoulders), to close to 3 full bags a day when it gets really really cold. I have actual timed them for some of my reviews to get a burn length on the fuel. I average about 12 hours per bag on the medium heat setting. Like imacman says. To many variables for this to be of much use to you.

If you list the sq footage, We "might" be able to get you "close" on how many tons to heat the shack for the season.

I go by past fuel performance.For example i used to go thru 4 tanks of oil a year. Now i burn about 5 ton of coal or that would = 7.5 tons of pellets or the wood cord equivalent of 4 tanks of oil depending on which fuel you changed to. I use wood and coal but would consider pellets.

3 tons should be pretty close. 4 tons to have a buffer. If they like it really hot add some extra's to be safe!

My stove on a 1 = low burns a bag a day, on a 2 = low medium, maybe 20 hrs, on a 3 = medium prob bag a 1/2 day, higher than that i never used.

With the temp set at 72 and the feed rate a little over 3.5. I can get 12to 15 hours out of a bag. With outside temps around 25. Colder than that burn times decrease.

I burn about three tons a year ... Shoulders I get about a bag every two days... Cold season - a bag a day
