I've got a late 70s Glacier Bay wood/coal insert. Have had a Woodstock Fireview that I am finally getting around to installing, long story as to why this lingered in its crate for years but I'm ready to get it in. Friend wants the old Glacier Bay to use in a weekend cabin - it's a wood hog for 24/7 burning but as an occasional heat source in a cabin it'll be fine.
The problem I'm having is getting the fireplace surround off of the GB. There are no visible fasteners. Itis clearly made up of 3 pieces - 2 on either side that come up to the top of the stove and one horizontal that rests on the top. I've tried to carefully wedge the top piece of the surround off but am aonly able to get about a 1/16 of an inch of play on one side. Is there some trick to this that I'm missing or have forgotten? I'm guessing that top piece of the surround may have tabs etc that slide into receptacles ont he side pieces.
Guess I could take the grates etc out, remove the doors to reduce weight and then try to pull the entire unit out of the firebox but it seems as if getting the surround off first is the best way to do this.
I've tried to find the original paperwork that I'm sure is someplace in the hosue but have had no luck..
Anyone got any suggestions? I can post pictures if they would help but all they'll show is smooth steel with a narrow joint.
