Well, a buddy and I spent a long day moving 16,000 pounds of coal and a brand new coal gun. Have to say I'm a little sore tonight! We had a pretty big John Deere tractor with a loader and pallet forks, a smaller tractor that we drove over the grass, a truck and trailer and my rollback truck. Two tons were still on pallets in the barn and were easy. The other six tons were in a "sunroom" off the basement and had to be carried one bag at a time about 50 feet where we piled them on pallets to be moved with a tractor with bucket forks and in a trailer. The small tractor this guy had could only handle 14 bags at a time but we got them all moved and up to the roll-back. Some of the top bags had been beaten by the sun and had to be dumped in garbage bags to carry them out. The Coalgun was slid on a pallet and with the help of a pallet jack was slid outside to the tractor. The little tractor handled that pretty well and was soon on the rollback too. Along with this boiler and all this coal I got a whole bunch of Duravent pipe, a brand new Grunfos 3-speed circulator and a big Amtrol expansion tank. Good haul for one day!

Time to go and bathe my 2-year old so I'll add some photos and tell you about them later.

Two tons on the truck along with the boiler and the forks that we switched back and forth between the tractor where we were loading and my tractor at home.

Four pallets of 700-1000 pounds each.

Another couple of pallets of coal.

Trailer full of loose bags.

The new boiler in the barn. It won't get hooked up and burning until next year. Still have to insulate the walls and ceiling and put up some interior walls.

14 gallon Amtrol expansion tank that came with the load.

Unreal Woodsrover! I still can't believe the guy gave you a boiler. ;lol That is awesome. Good for you. Thanks for sharing the pics and I look forward to seeing you install that and see how you like burning coal. Have you been burning much in the other Wood Gun you have?

Pretty sweet, eh? He's got a beautiful Bridgeport mill with a Mititoyo digital readout he wants me to take too. It'll go nicely with my old Atlas 10" lathe.

I've been burning the Woodgun since last Thursday but I shut it down today. Hell, it was 73 degrees today! I'll fire it back up in the morning for showers and laundry.

 Alright. Now you are just going to far! Oh. Wait. Tell the guy I don't live too far from him and I am a really nice guy........... (Yea, that might do it.)

Did he put you in his will yet?

Btw, I don't know you, but you suck!

Ok, so this was all FREE RIGHT? And the guy let you use his tractor to load it up?

Sometimes I guess you have to ask the right guy the right questions at the right time at the right place...........
GREAT SCORE!

I still think your just shooten' from the hip now.

No, he didn't let us use his tractor...He helped load it all!

Yup, all free. The buddy that turned me on to this guy got a whole bunch of stuff too. A brand new commercial meat smoker, a bunch of wood working tools, a brand new Grizzly dust collection system, a snow blower and a rototiller. The guys cleaning house and you're right, we were in the right place at the right time.

You know what I say "ask and you shall receive, knock it shall be opened"

We can't take with us and so the guy is obviously paying it forward.
Good for him and for you.

That's a good way to look at it, Mike. I guess we all do that one way or another and I don't take my good fortune for granted.

Got all the coal stacked up under cover today. Wasn't all that bad...Took me maybe 2 1/2 hours. I won't start burning this until next year when the barn is finished and even at that I probably won't fire it up until November or so and will keep it down around 45 degrees unless I'm working out there. I hope there is three or four years worth of coal there but I have absolutely no experience burning coal so I'm just guessing.

Ya gotta love coal, that pic in your shed (if it's the 8 ton you mention) is equivelent to 9.34 CORDS of hardwood!
Or, coal @ 28 million btu/ton vs. hardwood @ 24million/cord. That (relatively) little pile of coal is 224 MILLION BTU'S! I'm curious how cleanly is is burned in your Coalgun? Do you know if coal gasifies like wood? The only time I remember the smell of coal burning was years ago on a high school ski trip up into PA where they mut have used it for ? boilers. It was not pleasant, but I'm sure that was prolly an ancient boiler and this was 35+ years ago.

Every time I think about it I'm blown away. I just keep shaking my head saying "it's unbelievable what he got for free, just unbelievable"

Hey 711mhw, did you always have that in your signature or did I just notice that you have 711 acres of mix hard woods to play on. That's friggin sweet bro. I'd have a lot of fun with that much land.

How much are you sitting on woodsrover?

I like it! There are quite a few coal burners up here. No coalguns as far as I know, but many Axman Andersons, EMF stoakers, and some hand fed stuff people have gone back to in the past few years. When you first load the coal up, it smells of sulfer and then peters out for the most part. Still that rotten egg smell at times though. It's the coal ash that is the dirty part, from what I've heared/observed about 30-40% ash by volume, gassing it may be much different though, as is the ash content when we gassify wood....almost non-existant.

No body reads the "fine print".

Yup, we have 11 acres here in NW CT along the Housatonic River. Mostly maple, cherry, ash and some red and white oak. We do have an acre or two of nice, tall white pine that I use for lumber. We had a wicked storm blow through here in June that knocked down years worth of firewood and lumber. Still trying to clean up that mess.
