The X27 has been my favorite splitting tool for quite a while. So I figured, why not get the smaller of the series for camp fire splitting and other chores. Yes, I have other mauls and hatchets, but they haven't been used much since I found these guys.
Take care,
Tim

Good lookin' pair.

I too really like the fiskars axes, and received the x11 about a year ago as a gift. I find it works really well for splitting a regular sized piece of firewood in 1/2 (for shoulder burns, or pieces I should have split smaller before, etc). Since I burn from the basement I have a splitting block down there, and just knock em in 1/2 as I need them. Lot nicer using that versus a regular axe in the house.

The only thing I found, which maybe the x7 (i think that is what you have) is better for, but my x11 has a head a bit too wide for splitting kindling well. I still use a smaller estwing hatchet for that.

That looks like a good set of tools timusp40. I have never tried them. Would make a good Christmas gift as pen has experienced. I may have to add the 27 to my santa list. The wife was asking me for a few ideas the other day. I have a small axe that I use already in the basement. A large maul I use out by the garage where the major wood processing takes place. But could use a nice splitter by the back window just before the wood comes inside. Then I need to stop all inside splitting. Cut down on the mess before it happens.

Gasifier,
A lot of talk on these forums about the Fiskers series. Some love them, others not so much. I have litterally beat the snot out of that X27 and have no complaints. I split all my wood by hand. I keep a very sharp edge on it (came that way) and have split rounds that otherwise would go into the ugly pile. Just gotta find what works for you.
Take care,
Tim

Yes. I think that is very true. I think it probably depends on how much power you have. I have noticed that the maul works nice on the tougher woods because I don't have the power that some guys have. I then can flip the maul over and hit a wedge if I need to. As far as Ash and Pine goes, most of the time a good axe is fine. But the axe I have is too small for a lot of stuff. I think it is a Collins 2-1/2 (?), and is good for splitting the smaller stuff. But maybe I will give a try to the x27 for an in between size.

I'm still getting used to the X27. I can't seem to break my heavy maul habits of brute force. Going easier with more snap seems to work better with the X27 for me. I picked up the hatchet on sale at TSC for $18.00 recently. The price had gone back up to $26 but the tag hadn't gotten changed so I got the cheaper price!:)

I use the hatchet all the time. Not sure where my long one is. ;)
