Create a "Hall of Flame" section

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.

Should Hearth.com create a "Hall of Flame" for extraordinary posts across all sections?

  • No, that's a lame idea!

After seeing a new forum member post a pretty cool idea I suggest a "Hall of Flame" section be created for extraordinary posts which would be a cross section of all sections of the forum. Thinking these "items" could be voted in somehow..

Ray

There are two facets to this....
1. Selecting the proper posts for it.
and
2. Whether or not members would use it and why?

Having them marked does nothing unless it fill a need which is not currently filled.

Moderators currently have a way of marking threads with a prefix - you see it in this forum room.

I'll take a quick look at the tools available to see if they fit our scope.

This may be the best thread ever- I nominate it

(By the way- does anyone recall the Hall of Flame on King of the Hill?)
No I wasn't aware of that.. Sounded like a good name for a forum section though..

I was just thinking it would be a one stop shop of the best of hearth.com. This could be humor, pics, you name it. A cross section of everything. I realize this could be subjective this is where the voting/poll would come into play further engaging forum members.. Just an idea that popped into my head.. Dunno why I must be a weirdo lol..

This can probably be done by instituting tags - we could then tag certain threads.....and the list of those threads can be sorted by hitting a tag......

We wouldn't need a lot of tags -

An example of a tax cloud is here:
http://www.cfbhq.com/tags/

If you click on any of the tags, you will see the resulting posts.....

We could have just a few tags.....

Another possible method is star ratings of posts...

I like both those ideas particularly a star rating system (or for hearth.com use the little flame icon like on my hearth.com hat. It would be great to be able to sort a subject by rating as this would float the best rated or most popular info to the top. Sort of like a self adjusting sticky.. What do you think Craig?

Ray

I have to think which ways are the best. I don't like the idea of rating from 1 to 5 starts, but would prefer only one or two ratings - that is, mark the 4 start or 5 star threads.

Then there is the question of how to find and rate them - but I think this part can be solved.

You may have already noted the "thread prefixes", which can be searched or sorted.......there are sorta like tags.

What's to be the purpose of this? So when I'm really bored I can go back and read archived old threads/posts? I can already do that...and I never do. Who's gonna use it? Who gets to decide what goes into it, and how will that be decided...specific criteria or just "I like it"? What's to keep dang near every post from ending up in this place? I guess I just don't see a need/use for it, nor any way to define or administer it. Rick

I think the possible purpose would be a new user who comes to the forum and wants to page through a forum and see the best posts as opposed to the most recent or largest.

Another might be when you search - if a bunch of results come up, but only a few are tagged or starred, you know where the answer might lie....

That's the whole reason for this thread - to brainstorm as to what it might do and for who. Those who know how to do the google searches within this site rarely need anything else - but someone who is coming as a newbie may need more...

I guess the easiest way to think about it might be a larger pile of stickies which is available on demand?

I think you're on the right track sort of a floating adjustable list that tends to float the most likely best result to the top. Just an idea doesn't have to be done. I don't want this to create extra work for any of the moderators if anything it might create less work and less repeated questions..

Ray

Posts I get a kick out of? Posts containing the best, most concise technical information? Posts with the most delightful dog pictures? Posts with the grooviest YouTube music clips? Will there be a committee of some sort to consider the week's nominees and enshrine the winner(s)?

Liking your idea Rick! The forum would be more interactive and this would also provoke thought and voting would be a cool idea!

Ray

I'm sorry, Ray, but I think maybe I'm not being clear. I can't imagine just how this thing would be defined or administered. I don't know what would stop nearly every dang post on every forum from ending up in it. Just look at the frequency with which our membership uses the "Like" button.

I hear you Rick if this isn't practical just can the idea. I can see where there could be issues.

Ray

Not my call, buddy. I'm just sorta brainstormin' here just like you. You got Craig's ear, and he's the kinda guy who will listen and then try dang near anything that a member suggests. I'm a good soldier...give me my marching orders and I'll carry out my mission or die trying.

Hopefully some other forum people will chime in so we can come up with a solution between all of us.

Ray

Im watching. Been watching since we post #1.

I got nothin for ya though. I do think, that as time goes on and Forum evolves, members that either move on or god forbid pass away, will be missed and/or forgotten. Some members here do possess a true skill and a way to get across to others.

Maybe reading the old posts of "The Greats" will have a sort of reminiscence to current members and possibly a "Seeing of the light" for new members. ? Maybe I am off base.

Great idea. But like Fossil, I wonder how just any thread can be nominated?

Keep brainstorming Ray

I can't imagine any system which would work other than mods and selected others marking the threads - BUT, having a number of others who use the report or other feature to suggest the threads.....

I did some stuff which was like this in the classic stove forum - note that I separated into sub-forums and then have stickies (I'll do more) at the top of those sub-forums. I found those threads in various ways......usually sorting by number of posts or views.....

So my take on this would be to have a high standard and use it as I mentioned - as sort of an "on call" stickies list, which would be larger than the existing stickies and maybe contain the best 5% of posts.....

firstly, we must establish a committee to laydown guidelines, after which we can then elect the parliamentary body who, through a system of blind and deaf ballots will come together in a bi-annual gathering where we shall count "ye"s and "nah"s regarding turkey on rye, or ham on wheat for lunch. All memeber will then be handed their torches and thhose with red flames will be counted as a "yes...you're post is indeed awesomeness and shall gain immortailty" and those with lavender flame will not be counted as such. After that we engage in the "Dance Challenge" (ballroom, break, or modern catagories) for supremacy. Any questions?

Burn them at the stake of course ;)

Select 5 or 6 good posts each month.
Put them to a vote,
Post of the month then get entered into post of the year for a vote.
PS: "Ash Can' posts, not in the running LOL :)
