So, this'll be the first full season with the 30, and I THINK I've gotten the hang of it.

Boy, she sure does love that dry wood... one improperly-seasoned split and the cops show up to the party.

Anyhow, the question is this: the photos show my 30-
- packed full with 2-year seasoned BL
- primary air shut down fully
- outside temp about 45 or so.

I hope the photos show that there is no visible flame, in that I can't "see" the wood burning, but there are very active secondaries filling the entire top of the firebox. What I can see is a jet of air coming from the doghouse straight to the back of the box that looks like a blowtorch is attached to the doghouse. There is no visible smoke coming from my chimney.

So, the questions are:
- Is this normal? We're certainly warm... am I doing it right?
- Mrs. Blue is concerned that the primary is completely closed, insisting we'll choke down the fire and smolder ourselves to death. Yes/no?

Everything is as it should be. Tell the lil woman to kick back, relax and enjoy the warmth.

Tell the Mrs. that even with the air control all the way closed, there is still some primary air coming in. That's what's creating the glow in front of the boost manifold. And the secondary manifold's air is unrestricted I think.

Awesome. Now that I have a feel for how this stove wants to be fed, I'm down to tending it only a couple times daily. I don't have a proper ash rake, so 24/7 burning is still a little bit away- cleaning out ash and leaving coals behind is still a challenge.

No ash rake needed. I use my shovel and drag the larger coals from one side to the other, then scoop the ash out on the side I just scooped the coals away from. Working my way to center, then do the same for the other side. You should only need to scoop the ash about once a week.
