Had stove 500 with air barely open Went to bed and about 12 last night a new smell went and checked the stove it was fine.

But i looked at the door gasket today and one side was kind of shredded and the bottom had shrunk and got rock hard. I have saw this a few weeks ago but thought nothing of till now.

Think i am going to replace it i have also noticed shorter burn times this year.

Thank you.

Edit It was not creosote smell.

Done the dollar bill test and it failed also found soot build up at bottom of door.

Corey, looks like you've found the problem. Fortunately, this is a quick and easy fix.

Corey, I had the same problem , it was the crud I was washing off my window the liquid would run down my window and soak into the bottom of my door gasket. The hot stove would dry out the gasket and leave it hard and crusty.

The new one is in place got to let it set till tomorrow evening now.

For the first year i used liquid cleaner now for a while i have used wet paper dipped in ash.

Corey, just remember the paper should not be soggy; just damp.

I will try not to wet it so much i guess.

The stove should be ready to fire up tonight i think.

Fired the mag back up this morning Slower burn with 2 splits 450 stove top right now.

Was a little tougher getting going today could be cause it is raining and 42 out and better gasket.

Am i correct the the stove wont burn down the coals as fast cause it seem they are burning much longer?

During the peak of winter some folks have a problem because their coals won't burn down enough and some even shovel them out of the stove (egads! It hurts just to think of this). Never before had we ever had a problem with too many coals until we bought our first epa stove. What we found for the key is that just before the burn is down to all coals, we open the draft full. This holds the stove temperature nicely and burns the coals down.

Yes, there are times when we either forget or are not near the stove to do this. No problem. We just do it the next time or else add perhaps one split or some kindling and open that draft to let it rip. Solves the problem nicely.

Thank you Dennis.

I thought i would help things out by changing the bad door gasket out for new one. Reloaded this morning with some of my better wood not the oak and beginning to think the reason it burned so well before was the bad door gasket. No hissing wood just When i close the door the fire gets low stove does not heat past 400.

What im trying to say is My 12 foot chimney is the problem and trying to explain this to the family is like talking to the wall.

It definitely could be the problem or part of it. That definitely is shorter than most manufacturers want. Sometimes you can get away with a shorter chimney, sometimes you can't.

Going to experiment with it to see if i did not load enough wood.

I think i got used to a lot more air moving in the stove and burning hotter with less wood.

It is no wonder it did not get very hot with only 2 small splits in the stove;em

Operator error Maybe.

you should put more wood in their and then see how hot it is
