I got home at 4:30 today took my ash pan outside to my metal pail that sits on cinder blocks out in the yard. Its windy and snowy, I dumped it and went back in. Its now 6:55, 2 1/2 hours later, turned on the spotlight to check out the snowfall, and I see smoke. I walk over, and theres a coal bed of smoldering leaves. I quick hooked up the hose and sprayed the whole area, even though it is wet out and snowing. Just goes to show you can never be too careful.

Thats for sure,

Thats incredible. I wonder if it would have really gotten away had you not looked outside later on?? Where did the leaves come from?

That's why I hose down my ash pile after every dumping.

I have had a peace of carpet catch fire on me out in my snowy yard one year because of ashes.

I just wanted to peak at the first snow. Glad I did. Leaves were in the edge of the woods, in my compost pile. Was windy, ember must have went airborne.

That's what you get for trying to carpet your backyard!

That'll get you every time you try to carpet it. I finally gave up and grew grass.

Just curious, do you have a lid on the outside pail and the ember flew out when you were dumping your ashes into the outside bin? Or is it uncovered?

Damn glad you caught it before there was an issue. Can't be too careful. Thanks for the reminder.

Yes, the pail has a lid, it either happened when I was dumping the ash pan or while I was walking out to the pail, not sure.
