Feeling the Heat

One of the joys of living down the road from my parents is the ability to bum their tools. I've had my father's new-to-him Bobcat S185 out on my property for the past week. Well, he wants it back, so I rented a rock grapple type attachment this morning to do the last pre-winter heavy machine work.

I moved roughly 4-5 cords worth of log length wood onto a couple skids in the backside of the property where I plan on bucking and splitting. I don't know how you guys can get perfect stacks of log-length wood. Mine is more of a "pile" than a stack, with logs sticking every which way :). My main intention was getting 95% of it off of the dirt and into a central & permanent location for processing.

I still have random felled trees here and there that I didn't get to before I had to get back to the day job. So those will have to get bucked and thrown into a trailer to haul to the back.

This is addicting...

Hopefully I can get some pictures of my mess tomorrow and start doing some bucking, splitting (my favorite part), and stacking.

Don't you just love hydraulics ?
Will speed up the processing & be easier for sure;)

4 - 5 cords is more than a days work, have fun.
Almost feel sorry for you to have to move some with a trailer, but I don't :) LOL

The process all the way to stacking should create several pictures :)

Haha, I'd go out and take pictures right now, but sadly I don't have electrical service out there yet. Thus, the pictures would be solid black at this time.

I hope I'll be pardoned if I produce pictures tomorrow :)

We will consider the pardon after we see the pics. Tell us about your dog. We know he exist from the pic. ;lol Looks like a mix between a Rot and a cattle dog, or something like that. Cool.

Here is another way to move logs if you don't have the bobcat. This cost me less than $10 to build. Dray-1.JPGHauling logs a.JPGHauling logs c.JPG

He is an Australian Cattle Dog. Not registered, but he is pretty close to being a purebred. Quite the smart guy.

Skidsteers rock! I love them!

A man of my word, I am.

For reference, here is my last post that showed where my log pile was before, as well as the slash pile before it was moved into the clearing:

Some of the mess I didn't get to along the above path:

Like I said, I suck at making stacks of logs:

More of the soon-to-be processing area that still needs more clearing and cleaning:

Looking away from the wood pile area:

The house will be built right around where that slash pile is now.

Most of my logs are in the 6-10" range. That sled might work decent if I put a half dozen on it. Might need to put a couple side rails on the front to do that.

Shane, if you look closely at the picture you'll see that there is a ratchet strap holding the logs on. For smaller logs, it will work the same; just strap it on. If need be, one could put 2 straps on but I doubt you would need it.

How do you get those monster logs on that thing anyways? :)

EDIT: with the right tools many times what appears to be hard work is child's play.

Thanks Dave. We'll be getting 1/2 mile of power ran out to the property next year, along with the well and septic. Spring of '14 we'll get a construction loan to do the rest. Trying to avoid going in more debt than we have to.
