I have a chance to buy a St. Croix Prescott EXP...manufacture date of 12/20/10...Guy says the stove had a small hopper fire...had it checked out by the dealer and all is good. I understand that this is probably due to poor cleaning. No visible damage..

Stove looks NEW and has had approx 4 ton run thru it...asking price is $800...kind of a no brainer to me but wondering what everybody thinks...maybe some St. Croix owners.
I rebuilt a "Peppin" for my sister in law 2 years ago with a new harness and board and that is one of the best little stoves I have seen.

thanks for the input

I would say that is a excellent price for the stove. 75# hopper and a large ash pan to boot!!

Be certain it actually fires and that if you buy it, that you clean it really well before installing it.

I was thinking the same thing Smokey...

As long as the control board(brain) is not damaged & heat exchanger tubes are not leaking -(which with the low usage i don`t see a problem) everything else is relatively cheap, even if they take a crap (expendable parts) it`s still a bargain.

As for the $ it sounds good .

Like anything you won`t know if there is any defects till you run it but if you can fix it yourself you are 99% ahead as labor will kill that deal for $800 for someone w/o the knowledge (avg. joe w/o a clue) to fix it . But you sound like your handy.
I would purchase it.
Good luck.

How do I know if the Heat exchanger tubes are leaking??

I paid $900 for my used St Croix corn burner last year.....

If you don't buy it I will :)

You'll smell the smoke.

I figured that ......made me laugh too....the more I look at used stoves for sale...the age of some and the prices$$...I think this should be a great deal. Beats droppin' $2500+ for a new one.

thanks for the input and I will let u know how it works out

Well, I drove to PA sunday and picked up the stove...really nice stove, looks like new.
Talked with the owner ...who basically knew nothing about stoves...everything was "the dealer said this, and the dealer said that" and he told me that the stove didnt have a hopper fire but a creosote fire in the pipe.
I took out the combustion motor , which got hot but just bubbled the paint on the back side a bit. Saw a bit of ash in the combustion chamber but not bad. I will give her a good cleaning, install a new gasket and give it a whirl.
He told me the 1 season he burned it he never burned on anything but low...come to find out he only burned 2 ton through the stove ....which he gave me 10 bags of the second ton....must be some crappy pellets to soot it up like that....

Low burn with possible incorrect damper settings can lead to a lot of mess.

Read the manual and you'll discover that you are not to burn that stove on low only.

On my 5 heat levels the lowest i go is the #3 setting
Lower than that just creates more problems. IMO

Talked with the owner ...who basically knew nothing about stoves

Which reflects the price you paid.
Good deal. It should clean up nice:)
