Regency GCI60 problems

I recently bought a Regency GCI60 and did the installation myself. I have been in the HVAC industry for 20 years, so there are no installation issues. The problem that I am having is on the higher heat settings. On "5" the fire gets way too large and starts to soot. I have tried all the combustion trim settings and have backed all the way down with the pellet feed trim. The slider damper was originally set for the manufacturers spec at .15-.17" WC. I have also tried positioning the slider at every position from closed to open. It just seems that I can't give it enough air. Anyone have similar problems?? The manuals are useless and are as detailed as a blank sheet of paper. There are several other fit and finish shortfalls with this stove that I would like to see if anyone has experienced, but this one is the most important right now. Thanks for any input you may have. PS...I am burning Greene Team pellets and have burned about 20 bags in total. The rain cap is covered in soot already.

What fuel setting do you have the stove on? Are you on the premium setting or high ash?

I forgot to mention that I tried all three fuel settings. Premium seems to work the best. When I put it on the low grade setting, the agitator seemed to run more often and kicked out pellets before burned. It did reduce the size of the fire, but on heat setting 4 and lower, I had just the opposite problem...fire way too small and weak. I also tried the regular (green setting) and I forget the results, but I know it did not fix the problem. I will do the green setting right know, so I can refresh my memory and let you know. The fire is so big on "5" that it is impinging on the heat-x tubes and then running horizontal almost all the way to the sides of the stove in both directions. And you can see the flame being a darker orange and you can actually see black smoke in the chamber. Thanks for quick response and please keep it coming.

Do you have an adjustable auger cover. The older model enviros didnt have them. If you have one try closing it to expose less of the auger witch in turn will feed less pellets

That is a good question. The stove was manufactured NOV 2011 (that is another issue, seeing as how I bought it last month and didn't notice it until after I installed it...old stock..not too happy with the dealer about that). How do I access this? I did not see anything in the manual.

Open the hopper lid on the top back of the stove. look for the cover thats over the auger. if it has the adjustment there will be 4 screws. loosen them and the cover will slide up to expose more of the auger and down to expose less of the auger. Hopper has to be empty to see it. I bought my stove oct. 11 and it had it

Ok, I will have to try that when it runs out of pellets. The only concern I have with this is that I have the stove dialed in great on settings 1-4. In fact, I think the fire is perfect for max when on #4, but I want to use the extra fan speed of setting 5. I wish the fan could be controlled independently. How tall does your fire get when on 5? Does it hit the heat-x tubes and then fly sideways or does it just "lick" the heat-x tubes?

I re-tried the green setting for fuel quality and the fire is still too big. It may be a tiny bit smaller, but it kicks pellets before they are completely burned. Not as much as the yellow setting, but definitely noticeable.

this just happened to me last week. On setting 4 the flame was hitting top then going sideways and some black smoke. I cleaned the stove the next day and fire is back to normal. I have no idea why the flame got so high. Ive burned last year and now this year and never had a flame like that. Usually on 5 its just kissing the top. I have a baffle under my heat tubes witch the inserts dont have

Woke up this morning and had a pretty large flame on setting 3. I wonder if pellets make a difference. Maybe some are smaller. If smaller they feed more per turn of the auger. Just wondering. Im burning stove chow and the flame seems to vary

Even on heat setting 3, trim 3 my flames hit the tubes. I drop the feed trim to 1 or 2 to keep them mid way between the tubes and the top of the burn pot. Heat level 5 they go way up into the tubes like the OP describes. That part is normal.
