My stove side temp is higher then my stove top temp.

I thought it was the other way around?

Normally is higher on top, probably won't stay that way long.
Do you have heat shields inside the stove at the sides or firebrick or both?

No heat shield just on back of stove.

Inside the there is the secondary burn system then fire brick.

Happens if you are reading the temp between the baffle and the top of the brick retainers. Or between the secondary air manifold and the brick retainers. Nothing insulating the side of the stove there from the firebox temps. The bricks and the baffle insulate the rest of the stove body sides and the top plate.

That is were the one on the side is at.

Would it be a better gauge spot then?

On the Vigilant, the sides and front of the stove would occasionally be hotter than the stove top. Largest discrepancy I remember were temps north of 850 on the front door, right side casting panel with a hot spot over 700, and the stove top sitting at 600.

Generally after the burn levels out they are pretty much the same temps. I have a thermo on the side of the 30 but don't pay as much attention to is as I used to. It does come in handy when the blower is going since the stove top reading is meaningless with the blower blowing over the top plate.

I've never even put a thermometer on the side or front of either of my stoves. I used to put one on the stovetop, but I don't even do that anymore. I have mag thermos on my single-wall stovepipes just above the stove collars. I've become accustomed to comfortably operating my stoves in this configuration. Rick

Sure wish I could do that too. Be great to be able to see it from across the room. But that stainless elbow in the fireplace just not want to play nice with a mag thermo.

just done a reload side temp is 100 degrees hotter then top blower is on lowest setting.

stove top 450 side 610.

I went by the side temp had the air adjusted soon and getting a light show now.

Blower on med.

Top is cooler as the blower is blowing air over the top of the stove cooling the surface temps.

This means i have been wasting wood to get the stove air adjusted.

No wonder my burn time are shorter then others.

I see what you mean your letting the stove get hotter than you wanted too as your surface readings are off as the temp reading is being cooled by your blower being on. This can lead to a shorter burn time letting the stove get too hot before shutting the air back down.

Shew 86 in here got a window open.

Cruising at 600 side 450 stove top

Wanted to thank every one for the help last night i got 6 hours out of that load last night.

Nice fine-tuning, Corey. :)

+1. . .thermo on the appliance adapter, just after the stove collar.
