Here's the newest (albeit quite old) addition to the family; "Boo"

His family couldn't keep him anymore, so we decided to give the old man a home.

The boy seen here is the oldest of my two. There are no pics with the youngest and the dog yet as he's been so excited, running and yelling "dog!" that a picture has been out of the question.

Is that a dog or a polar bear? Good on ya for taking him in.

That's a beautiful dog. Looks like he even enjoys being the 'pillow'. What breed is he, Pen?

Thank god the animal is more than good natured and that follows with the breed, a Samoyed (sled dog).

Sweet looking guy, pen.

Awesome he got a soft place to land

Beautiful dog pen, and it's great that you gave this old dog a place to relax and live with a family! I have two dogs that are family members as much as my own kids are! We rescue dogs and encourage others to do the same, if my house was bigger I'd have a lot more dogs I can tell you that!

how old is he? It is wonderful that he will adapt to a new home and that you have opened yours. Several breeds are one person dogs.

He's up there at 10.5 yo.

He has troubles getting up off the floor if he's been sleeping for a long while on a slippery surface, and with stairs, otherwise you'd think he's 1/2 his age as once on his feet, he moves well, pulls hard, plays fetch, etc. Even when standing, he's very steady on his feet and just plain looks like he moves smoothly. My 2 year old tried a running mount on him like a cowboy trying to get out of Dodge already :( . The boy wasn't tall enough as the dog was standing so he just ran right into the side of him, and I was amazed that the old dog stood right there, easily handling a sidestep, simply amused with the boy.

I had a German Shepard in the past who had hip dysplasia, and once he started having troubles, he had troubles with keeping his balance more than getting up, so this display of the problem is new to me.

So, knowing a dog with stair trouble was coming home, I built a 14 foot ramp for him off the back deck as he has trouble with even a few steps. For being new to the house, and presumably nervous, I was impressed how quickly he took to it.

The previous owners gave him Nature Made "Triple Flex" once daily, and Carprofen 75mg tabs as needed (a few times a month, the day after an extra active day).

His weight is what I believe to be high for a Samoyed at what I'd estimate to be 70 lbs, but he seems trim. They've been consistently feeding him Beneful Healthy Weight. It's been a while since I looked into dog foods and their nutrition, but my first glance at the label and having corn meal as the first ingredient didn't impress me much. After more research, I might try switching him over to something different.

In the end, the realist in me told me to pass the dog up, as I know what's to come. However, I also had a good feeling about where this dog was going if someone didn't step up soon, and there's still a bunch of love there, so that softy I try keeping under wraps came through and here we are;em

Any advice you guys have on the hip deal or food would be great too.

Thanks!

I feed Ace Purina ONe Chicken and Rice mixed with Dogswell wet food. This comes in three flavors: Chicken, Lamb and Duck and two varieties: Vitality and Hip. In the dry, Chicken is the 1st ingredient. In the wet, there are no grains or fillers. Check it out, it's impressive. I had fed Ace the premium expensive stuff thinking it was best, but he began refusing it. The vet said that some dogs do just as well on the non-premium food and you will be able to tell from the dog's coat, eyes, and general demeanor if the food it working for him. Anyway, that's my two cents.

As the vet wrote in the recommendations section when I took my wife's 18.5 year old cat in last. "Love him".

That's one great looking dog!

Pen, Nutram Natures Choice makes a Large Breed Senior kibble that works really good. As well, as Loon had mentioned, Metacam usually works really well with keeping the older dogs confortable and moving. Good luck.

He's my best little buddy!
Some who don't know cats say they have no personality. Nothing could be further than the truth! My three each have a different attitude, Ine want to be loved all the time. One wants attention only on her terms and one will occasionally like to be near, maybe touching, but not on.

Mine has quite the personality, I really can't describe it but he does.

Pen,

Lovely looking dog - and he even looks content (already) in your home! Good for you for taking him in. Our current dog was only 9 weeks old and was going to be let out in the woods (no Humane Society) when our son 'rescued' her and brought her home in his pocket. :)

This summer, while spending time at our permanetly parked travel trailer in a campground, a motorhome pulled in next to us and they had 4 Samoyed's. They were all show dogs and were to appear in a competitions in the area. They & their owners camped next to us for 4 or 5 days - we never heard a single bark out of any of the dogs the whole time.

One morning the owners went out for breakfast and left all 4 dogs alone in the (expensive) motorhome. Within 10 minutes after the dogs were alone I swear it sounded like a bunch of teenage boys playing basketball - thump - thump - thump - all inside the motorhome - and, I swear, they 'talked' - not barked - to each other! It was so amusing and not disturbing at all. I think they had those treat balls and were rolling them around to get the treats out.

We loved their company - hope they come back again and camp next to us.

Beautiful, beautiful dogs.
