Private Stock ?

Okay, How many of you have a private stock?
I mean, That speacial wood you pull out and burn when friends or other "special occasions" occur.

Kind of like my old bottle of Glenlevit, (Scotch). My neighbor gave me about a 1/2 cord of oak almost 4 years old. It burns supreme for sure. Nice show and tell to the naysayers too.

Note: this does not apply to all the ones who burn "private stock" all the time because that's all they have. (years ahead and jealous).

Since I've been hoarding the good stuff since I started cutting I'll burn Beech.

Every few years I get some Honey Locust,Apple and/or Red Elm.The Apple if its smaller is saved for the smoker & weber kettle.

The special occasion is cold weather! Shagbark Hickory from the spring of 2009 is the flavor this year.

Whenever I get big straight stuff, I try to make as many 8x8s as possible and let age properly for those special occasions. 125 pounds of dry wood in the firebox brings some warmth to an otherwise cold and blowing night.

You've been drying that monster for almost 2 years.

I don't know if I'd call it a private stock, but I do have 'special' pieces. Most of these are knots, burls, scar tissue, driftwood (freshwater) or otherwise unique wood formations. These sit on the railing of the deck or the top of the wood pile, and I rotate them by hand. Many of these have been hauled out on my bicycle rack or in my backpack, so they each come with a unique story too.

I have some other specials which are oak remnants from a grinder. A fire crew came through this area to drop the fuel load, and they ground everything up into these fine, flayed pieces. The best are about the size and shape of a bow tie, but the fibers at the ends are flayed out. These had been sitting on the ground for a few years before we scooped them up, and are quite dry. These are only used when a fire is in order when backpacking... one match on the end of these things, and your fire is up and running quick.

I have some old growth Manzanita seasoning now, and I may see about cutting them into an 8x8 square like that.

I have a pile I call my 'Christmas wood', nice straight splits of Ash seasoned 2 years which look good in the log holder next to the stove, also have some old Oak I have been saving for real cold weather.
Currently burning uglies and scrap wood.

I'll probably get into that stuff in the 2014 - 2015 season. There is about 1/2 cord of Locust and Beech in the private stock for those special occasions until then.

I pretty much burn what I got regardless of who is visiting since to me . . . all my wood is good wood . . . and good wood = heat.

That said . . . like Solarandwood I do have some large rectangles and squares for use when it is pretty darned cold out and I'm looking for a long burning fire overnight.

I have to admit I laughed while reading this post. That is something I've never given thought to! All of our wood is good though.

I wish there was something else new to try all I have is oak,locust,hedge,beech,ash and cherry,the latter 2 my least favorites ironwood and red elm are abundant here also as is walnut don't even bother with them there's so much.Will post a pic of 2 huge elms sandy took down and a monstrous walnut that just died this summer.

Wow, hard to believe ash is not on your favorite list. I understand with the cherry. We don't have a lot of it but quite often will cut a tree or two of it but they are small trees.

They don't stay as long as they used to.

We always burn nothing but the best here. I am a full fledged and proud of it wood snob. No room on my 1/4 acre for anything but the best. Red oak, Black Locust, Ash, and Cherry. Not very interested in anything else and don't have to be either with 13 cords on hand. I have been known to drink some cheap booze though.

I just picked up about 1/2 a cord of 10+ year old Hemlock, and 1/2 cord of 10+ year old cedar all split from a friend selling his house. Would you call this a "private stock" or "Vintage" flavor?

Okay, this is good. I'm not the only one... I can show this thread to my wife and now she won't think I'm crazy for my "private reserve" as I call it. I have some 2-3yr old cherry and some 8-9yr old white oak remaining that I keep in the corner of the wood shed for those "special occasions".
