I vote for ash also. The older they are and the more they have to compete, the deeper and thicker their bark gets.
If I wasn't sure, I would cut some before wasting my time on it, if it was poplar.

Cut it open and see what's inside. If it's ash, it will likely have a uniform color through the round. If it is the dreaded tulip poplar, there will be a core of yellowish/baby-puke green. Tulip poplar is evil I tell ya! It lies to you....it looks like ash, but it's not. Also, check and see what the leaves are. Poplars will still retain a bud-looking leaf through the winter but an ash will drop all of its leaves. Ash is great wood....splits easily, seasons quickly and good (but not great) heat output.
