This tree was standing dead when we moved here 22 years ago.I never cut it down because every year it was home to various species of owls which we like to have around. This spring it came down so, I cut some of it up and pushed it into the ravine, most of it was still burnable and in surprisingly good shape,I've been burning it the last couple of weeks, but the rest I'll just leave l've got plenty of other stuff to burn besides it. Check out how solid it still is. Dead Ash Tree 001.jpgDead Ash Tree 002.jpgDead Ash Tree 003.jpgDead Ash Tree 004.jpg

Standing dead trees usually don't rot. Nice that you were able to get some heat out of it after all those years.

On a somewhat off topic note, the bark on your Ash looks a lot like the bark on this tree from another thread.

I posted it to ask if it was Ash and there are those who say the bark is to deep to be Ash, but it sure looks like your Ash to me.

There are similarities Steve but like I stated before, they just aren't the same. Perhaps this could be ash but not white ash?

Ohlongarm, this is a true testament to ash. Not only will it last a long time on the stump but it is one of the very best for keeping well even though it is on the ground. A few times now we've found some old wood I've cut but evidently had a full load so left some laying in the woods. Not only that but it was where water stands for part of every year. Even after 4-5 years it will still be good to burn.

This is good to know about ash as I have a few acres of (mostly) ash that is in a lower area that is sometimes soft and wet during the spring. Those ash are still good, but we had a couple in our yard get the EAB this year, so I'm figuring it won't be long before the ones in the woods start going too. I actually like burning ash just fine, but I'm not looking forward to that as I've seen the devastated ash woods over in the thumb area.

Amazing it's that solid after being dead that long.
Good looking wood.

Great pictures

Ash is a great wood to burn. Glad to see you got to use some of that tree ohlongarm. And mother nature will use the rest. Some nice BTUs for ya. Are you working on next years wood, or the year after that?

Actually,I'm about 7-8 years ahead and am not burning anything less than 3 years young, however in trying to answer your question somewhat, I worked a solid 8 hours today and cut up all the cherrys that Sandy took down,a crapload for sure.I will definitely post pics tomorrow of all the cut cherry, and the stack when I haul out of the woods, hope to get everything hauled and split by weeks end,so now I gues I'm about 9 years out,my guess give or take a year either way. I guess how cold our future winters are will play a role somewhat. Thanks

ohlongarm,
Here is a photo of some Ash from last summer. I do not know how many years it was standing dead, but quite a few for sure. All of it was solid and will make excellant fuel. Here also is a closeup photo of how the tree met it's doom.

Holy chit ohlongarm. You have enough wood where you could take a break from c/s/s. Better yet, because it sounds like you love c/s/s and heating with wood, keep it up. Then, think about taking a vacation next year using your proceeds from all your hard work. Start planning for a vacation for late next year sometime, sell some real "seasoned" wood which sells at a good price in the fall, and use that money to go on vacation! Nice work man! I can't wait until I get 2 full years ahead. It may happen this winter. I almost have all of next years wood now. Just a little more. Then a couple of short vacation this winter and hopefully I will be able to get enough wood for 2014/15! Oh man, that would be nice. Hopefully we won't get too deep of snow to keep that from happening. ;lol

Nice pics and very informative as well, typical EAB,but those of you worrying that ash will go extinct don,tThe only species on planet earth that ever caused the extinction of another specie is THE HUMAN BEING,that is a well substantiated fact, the ash tree will survive and not be eradicated from the planet by the EAB.

I do enjoy the work of css but there comes a time, when enough is enough, and as far as selling wood goes I'm not into it,but might sell a little and take you up on your idea.

Thats definately not ash Flat, maybe sassafrass? not sure but Im sure it isnt ash, ash seems to be the most prevalent wood around here and I burn tons of it, its similar but something else.

I don't know what a full cord of good seasoned wood goes for where you are but I will guess $225. $225 x 5 = one really nice long weekend vaca! ;lol
