Feeling the Heat

I know this is the Wood Shed forum but thought my topic would get the exposure of a lot of people whose opinion I would value here...I also posted a thread on the Wood Stove and Fireplace forum...I'm shopping for an insert. the wife doesn't necessarily want a wood stove with the exposed pipe although I'm not opposed to the idea...I'm contracting a most reputable company, they're coming by this evening, I'm sure they will have good recommendations but I want to hear what experienced users have to say...here are a couple of pictures of the Holiday hearth...thanks...

I could be wrong, but I don't think you'd find an insert to fit in that small space. I wonder if there's something made in Europe for that?

I am afraid you will be making that opening larger if you want an insert in there man. How could you stay in that room if it were a fire in there anyway? It looked like a small room from the picture.

Don't see it happening

I'm not against having the opening enlarged, we'll see what the chimney guy says...the room is actually quite big, I'm standing in about the middle...thanks for your comments so far...

Well I would have some recommendations, but first I would like to know your measurements. Could we get the opening width, height, and depth? Also how wide and long is that slab in front, need to check clearances.

You might want to look at "sort-of-inserts" such as THIS Regency (that I highly recommend.
The minimum opening needed is 28" W x 21" H.

The only thing I can say for sure is that next years Christmas tree will have to find a new home.

Also, at first I thought I saw a ghost, then realized it was your reflection in the mirror.

Would agree with comments about the small size. Perhaps a stove in the fireplace might be an option rather than a insert. I almost went that route with my fireplace. That would open the door to some small stoves like the Englander 17-VL, or a Drolet Pyropak. Price range would also be useful info as well and how much heat you are expecting to get out of it. Heat the room or the floor or the house?

Hey, on that Regency link the Alterra needs:
Minimum Fireplace Opening*
Width (front) 23"
Height 19.625"
Depth 15.0625"

*using standard flue adaptor

If the standard brick length is 8", would the fireplace opening be 24"?
The height looks good. The depth, 15? Do-able.?

What size is the opening? Width/height/depth

25 1/2" wide 30" high 12 3/4" deep...chimney guy is just leaving now...had chimney cleaned and video inspected...if we go with fireplace again will have it deepened and get stainless chimney liner...will decide when they give us recommendations...we're basically just heating the big living room...rest of house has water radiators except for basement where I'll get a wood stove (one day)...that's not what she said...

Albert, that is beautiful. I'd still be tempted to put a free standing stove in there rather than an insert.

I think the Blaze King princess insert will fit without much if any modification. The other two that come to mind are the Buck 21 (23 1/4 x 21 x 15 WHD) and the Lopi Republic 1250 (23 5/8 x 20 3/4 x 12 1/2 WHD) min firebox dimensions but both of those are fairly small inserts.

If you have an open stairwell near that room you could probably partially heat the upstairs too. Just a thought.

maybe if you extend the hearth you can do what Dennis said (Backwoods) and your options would expand on what you could put there, you'd just be limited to something that rear exits but then you could go with a Woodstock.

I would love a stove in there, it's my first choice but the wife won't have it (so far) will probably make a decision in the next few days...starting to lean in the make the firebox bigger, keep it a fireplace direction...need to find out more about inserts, but yeah, I've always wanted a wood stove...
