Good cheap saw?

So Im in the market for a chain saw but I cant afford much right now. I would love to get a sthil or a husqvarna but thats out of my price range right now. So Im looking at one of these:

theyre pretty much all poulans which I understand arent the best but which one would be the best?
 
Before you choose one of those , go and visit a few OPE dealers . They may have saws that have been traded in for a decent price . Personally , I'd save up and buy something a little better than those saws you posted,and I'd get it from an OPE dealer .
You will get service after sale . That can be very important .
 
Nixon I have to ask what is an OPE dealer? HittinSteel thanks thats nice and not to far from my price range.
 
I would rock that wild thing..........Just keep it sharp and run it for all its worth. If you only get 5-10 cords its done its job. Buy better when you can and trade that suxer off! ;)

(Oh crap they want almost 200.00 for one now) man its been a long time since I look at prices.

I would chime along with putting your money towards a good used Husky or Stihl. That one HittinSteel referenced is exactly what I'm talk'in bout! Aren't you near the Great Dismal Swamp Refuge? Love that name! I had a friend who used to live just a ways over the border in Virginia. I recognize that town name from down around there.
 
Poulons will work. They aren't sexy, or fast, but they will do the job. I started with one under the Craftsman name and still, wait, after Sandy I sent it to CT with my cousin. He has it now. They work just fine if you keep the chain sharp. You'll know when it's time to upgrade.

I think Im going to have to go with the poulan for now its really all I can afford I would wait but theres a guy near me that had his land cleared recently and he has lots of downed trees that he is giving to anybody that wants to come out and cut them up, Id like to go and get as much as I can before the rest of the firewood hoarders take them all. Even though nobody seems to keen on poulans what would be best the 14,16, or 18" blade? Im thinking 16-18 for general cutting should get me through this year and next while I search for a good deal on a stihl.

How big is the wood? What kind of wood?

That is the question? Oh and how much time do you have?


50 cc and 18" should be good for most blowdowns/ scrounging unless they're bigguns.

Stihling is bad go Johnny. ;)
 
I will second the Husky 435. I love mine. I would say twice the saw of any Poulan or Craftsman. Just saying.

HD, I think the refurbed 435 is a much better saw than the 240 for the same price.

I'd come up with an extra $40 and get the 435, but if you must get a poulan, get this one http://www.vminnovations.com/Product_2086/Poulan-P3314-14-Inch-33cc-Gas-Chainsaw-Refurbished-.html. That way, you have very little in the saw and can spend the savings on the imperative carb adjustment tool and a file to keep the chain very sharp.

With the low cc saws you are looking at, a 16" bar would be max, but a 14" would be much better.

I didn't even see the 435 , but I have saved the site for the future, cuz my next saw will be 40 to 45cc or maybe 50
 
Maybe Im missing something but according to those charts the 240 seems better higher RPM longer blade and higher cc? Am I reading this right?

Never mind I went to Lowes and looked at them in person I think Im going to order the refurbished 435 i like the way it feels and it matches my lawnmower. I like the quality of Husqvarna and the poulans just feel cheaper (they are) and I really dont know anything about them I want something that can last and handle many years of cutting.
