Might have to consider this one.

Probably not. Grandpa always used a buzz saw and cut wood small enough so he didn't have to split any. However, the practice is spreading nicely amongst the brethren here on hearth.com.

Can't risk it. If the cops ever got their hands on a copy...

I'm the highest possible percentage (99) Neanderthal.

Here is another strange one. My mom is italian and my dad more russian (jewish). We always assumed that any smarts which are in the family came from dad's side...but in the last couple of years I noticed that my mom was really intelligent in certain way - a fantastic bridge player, for instance. The test shows that mom's ancestors are from the Nordic countries while Dad's are more N. Africa/Middle East/

The way I figure it, my mom's DNA was in some "barbarian" - Germanic folks who came down and did away with the Roman Empire.

I'm not up on Euro history other than reading about the final barbarian attacks into Italy.

Figures. :) You're still striking blows against the empire. LoL

We paid $300 for this!

But it's a great deal - find out about your health, relatives, ancestors, etc.

$300. You must have done the FTDNA thingie like I did. I have literally thousands of matches on the various markers, but STILL no concrete evidence (i.e. Paper Trail) to where my Smith family surname originated. Haven't checked the Nanderthal stuff, yet, but that's a new offering. I've done up to 67 y-chromosome markers, & got some matches that are 3 & 4 markers off, but none dead nuts on...Maybe I'll upgrade to 111 markers to see what that yields...

The way I understand it, the very recent history - after intercontinental travel - is harder to trace. That will need more people to take the test and then share stories and known facts.

I took this particular test - it was $249 a month or two ago! It was $299 when the wife took it last year....

Quite the price drop. I think that with the Ancestry.com stuff out there on the internet & the "Who Do You Think You Are?" shows on TV, more interest is being generated in this type of stuff & with more people jumping on the bandwagon, along with improved DNA ID techniques, they can afford to pass the savings to us. It's kinda interesting when you take the migration BEFORE the Americas into account...
This is what it looks like for my particular Haplogroup:

Your link just brings us to a page where we need to input your name/password.

Yeah I caught that. I'll see if I can get the pic up...My bad.

EDIT: Can't do it from work. I'll hafta see if I can get it up here when I get home.

Or just give us your name, password, bank account numbers, social security numbers, mother's maiden name, pet's first name . . . ;)

Darn it Daksy . . . I think something is off . . . I tried to help you by taking out your entire life's savings (I have a killer deal from a guy who wrote me from Nigeria and we are guaranteed to more than quadruple your money) . . . but for some reason I keep getting a "Incorrect password" message.

Also . . . yeah . . . pets have first names. I have an Andrew Jackson, Dwight Eisenhower (but we just call him "Ike") and Harry S Truman.

Personally I would be afraid to do this test . . . afraid it would come back and say that their findings revealed that I am the Missing Link.

Maybe I should change my password to "INCORRECT?"

OK. We have a MamaCat. I guess her first name is Ma...

OK, now it's asking me for the middle name . . . would it be safe to assume the middle name is "ma?"

Several issues about these DNA tests. I was offered a genetic family history beta test for $100 a few months ago and I declined. The main reason is that particular company retains all personal information to do whatever they want with it: sell, trade, publish, offer, whatever. This one seems to be better about that and you can select not to have details about you disclosed, which is a good thing. I also have an extensive verified genealogy that they would just use to link and use to sell tests to others, so in my view they should pay me to have my DNA tested.

Past your gr-gr grandparents the ancestry from DNA is inaccurate on many lines as they are currently still using certain seed SW programs and microchips that are not always accurate on all populations. I know people that have documented evidence of their lines, and yet they are traced to other locations (such as southern Europe when they are obviously Skandinavian). While hanky panky certainly does and did happoen, it is not as common as one would think, and in many cases these DNA tests and links are still new and being improved as far as accuracy. So I would not hold the ethnic evaluation returned from these types of DNA tests as fact just yet. You can read about the flaws in these tests online.

Naw, just 100% Neaderthal. Unless you are of pure African descent, in which case you would not have any Neander genes. Neanderthals migrated out of Africa early on, and then modern humans evolved in Africa. They later migrated out of Africa as well and some mated with Neanderthals, adding mutations to the gene pool that are known only to Neanderthals. Many Neanderthals had red hair. The main distinction between the two human groups is that Neanderthals were hunters and only ate meat, and not seafood or much in the way of veggies. Thst is the reason they are believed to have become extinct; modern humans out competed with them eating a larger variety of food. As their DNA is still around, they are not completely extinct though.
