I'm home sick today, went out to the walmarts for cough drops and ended up picking up a pair of wilson shin guards for 5 bucks. I've been hit in the right shin one too many times in the past week. I hope the fact that they have soccer players on the package doesn't mean I have to turn in my man card.

I just finished splitting the rest of the elm I had on hand, using the maul of course, and predictably nothing came flying at my shins. If I didn't have the guards on my shins would have been elm magnets.

I broke my nose with a flying split. I was using an ax...That was over 20 years ago and its still crooked.

Reading that makes me glad that my brother says he is going to buy a wood splitter before summer.

Careful with the splitter, either horizontal or vertical. A knot pops just wrong, & some really sensitive areas tend to be in the line of fire. A C

Thanks cutter, not our first rodeo though. My dad burned wood my entire childhood as did both grandpas. One built his own splitter out of a Chevy big block, the other sold wood for a living. In short, I've spent a lot of time on both ends of a splitter.

Ahhhhh, then you know to turn a cheek as the wedge enters the round. Experience is a great teacher. A C

I used to hand split with a 'grenade' cone shape wedge. It flew off one time and hit me solidly on the knee cap. I dropped like a sack of taters. I just knew my knee cap was shattered. Turned out it wasn't but dayumm! That hurt!

They worked better than you thought!

Yes, it was amazing. We will see how it goes once I get the rest, aka the majority, of the elm home.
