I started to smell paint which means I hit a new high. I watched it for a while that night to make sure it wasn't going thermal nuclear.
I would be naked.
He should be fine.
The only problem i read there could be wind gust up to 40MPH
Try to find a camera to take some pics of how you are loading the stove and what the fire looks like. If everyone can confirm that there is nothing strange going on, it will put your mind at ease even more.
I can borrow one from a friend im sure.

If you cut those 14" splits in half would that allow you to load N/S? If so put a bottom layer loaded N/S then some longer lengths E/W; if it lets you get a full load you can bur this way all season until the shorter stuff is used up and get reasonable burn times. Pictures would still be good.

Cut them in half? The stove can handle 19 inch splits.

Still wondering about the burning with 40MPH wind gust Friday?

What are you worried about, specifically? Stronger draft? Strong wind doesn't always result in strong drafts. Sometimes back puffing occurs. Sometimes the draft sucks. Sometimes it's stronger.

I guess i will find out how it reacts I burned during Sandy's snowy side it made draft stronger but that was with 4 split burns.

Can you install a key damper in the pipe as a form of reassurance that you have control over the stove?

Yep, can't hurt. With short splits (they are splits and not rounds you are using right?) and the temps he's seeing, I'd say any parasitic drag it has in the open stage isn't going to do any harm. Only things with a pipe damper I'd warn of are don't fall into the trap of using it to hold more heat in the stove, and if only needed intermittently, be prepared for the evening you use it (close it down some) then forget to open it for the reload in the morning and have smoke pouring out / slow start.

I haven't had a chance to find the secondary air port on a magnolia, but if you can see it externally, and things get out of hand, you could temporarily block some of it off with a wad of aluminum foil also if the need arises.

Yeah i have a damper laying on a shelf just in case i would ever need to install it..

Those are splits not rounds.

The air port is right behind the primary air vent.

I understand what your saying about its use i would only use it if i had to. But i do think it could come in handy on some windy days or when its drafting real good witch i see sometimes.

That's how I use it. As such, maybe 4x in the last three years. The Mrs. uses it like an Emergency Brake. I don't ask how often she's done that, as I don't want to know <> I sweep the chimney more often than necessary just to be certain one of her "opps" (or mine on an off day) when I'm not here isn't an issue.

That is good to know that it will be my emergency brake that would make me feel better to have it in case.

I plan on sweeping the chimney before i install also.

bed time for me.

I misunderstood earlier post, I thought the short splits were only allowing you to get 40% fill and you were saving larger splits for colder months.

Start out with smaller fires and see if the wind plays a part in how your wood burns. I know I have to be a little more careful when its windy. The last couple times I had an oh chit moment was when it was windy.

I am going to try to install that damper before i need a fire tonight i know during Sandy it was a strong draft.
