Hello. Just wondering if any of you guys do anything to your cast iron stoves to keep the finish looking good? I was wondering if a guy should occasionally wipe the stove down with cooking oil? Kinda like seasoning a frying pan? My stove is a few months old now and I'm starting to notice a bit of discoloration on the stove top

I use Crisco for seasoning my cast iron frying pans, but would suggest stove polish for the stove.

No, you need to do it like the old timers always did it. Bear grease! Really put it on thick every spring when done burning then the stove will not rust on you. Lack of bear grease, just buy a 5 gallon bucket of lard..;)

I used the lard last year when the stove was on and i smoked the house out. beware

I tried Olive oil at the recommendation of a long time wood burning friend ! It looks great but man does it stink for a few days like well burning olives. I will never do that again !

Hmm. So far not sure what to do. Bear grease, crisco, or olive oil. Do t know who's serious or who's kidding. Sounds like a little of both

Leave it for now, pick up some stove polish from the dealer and clean it all up and polish it when you clean the chimney and shut it down for the summer. You'll get some smoke when you fire it back up in the fall so be prepared to open a window.

The last time I tried to grease a bear he got really pissed! !!! Better just use stove polish ;)

WIll stove polsh work on matte black painted stove? I would think not.

With a flat black cast iron, I use stove polish. I used it on the Vigilant, the Heritage, and the Defiant. It works for me. Quickly covers up any blemishes and surface rust. Keeps the castings looking new.

And this is why I am glad I got the enamel coating......I do season the black cook top though...I just do it like a cast iron pan with crisco...my wife said it made the house smell great.

The chipping of enamel is why I avoid the enamel coatings.
