Cruised 40 + acres with Backwoods Savage today and didnt see one like it. The bark is almost black. Man ol Sav taught me alot today.
That Dennis is a 1st class guy, isn't he Tiger? Looking forward to meeting him when we make the trip to Michigan this coming summer...

He truly is a top notch guy . . . I made a trip to NH to the Woodstock Open House . . . partly to see the new PH and get in on the free BBQ, but mostly to meet Dennis and some of the other characters from Hearth.com . . . I considered it a pilgrimmage of sorts . . . and the chance to meet the Reverend Backwoods Savage was a highlight of this pilgrimmage. ;)

Wisdom is priceless. I didnt know there was so many varities of oak till i started scrounging and being here.

I don't have any personal knowledge regarding what type of guy Backwoods Savage is, but I think that is a Black Oak. The bark of Black Oak lacks the shiny 'ski trails' of Red Oak, and the tree is usually more twiggy than Red Oak. The tree looks a little like Pin Oak, but I don't think the bark is right for Pin Oak.
