Hey guys

Before I get started on my rant I just want to say that I have lived in Canada my entire life. I am used to snow. .....

On Friday we received 37 CM (about 14 inches) and it was fun/pretty. Cleaned it up with my wonderful Ariens snowblower and it was done. I always get excited to shovel storms during the Holidays.

On Friday the forecast was calling for more snow on Sunday. It said "15cm". Well well well. It started snowing yesterday at 7AM and stopped this morning at 11 AM. 28 hours of snow! And winds of 40-50 KM/h. I think we got another 18 inches or so. I cleaned my driveway AGAIN this morning (took 2 hours), then had to scoop snow away from the back of my house because I need to shovel the snow off of my roof (incase it rains...) and I normally dump it behind the house. So 2 hours cleaning the yard, 2 hours scooping and blowing snow from behind the house and now I need to shovel my roof. In 5-6 days I will have spent 10 hours or so moving snow. Old man winter certainly started with a BANG!

Happy New Year to all!

Andrew

How much did you end up with total, Loon? Looks like around a foot +!

Swedish........

You do shovel the roof? Other than that how do you deal with the ice dams when the warmer weather starts melting the roof snow?

It does look beautiful. Here in Western Pennsylvania we only got about 9 inches or so. Nothing better than dealing with deep snow when you don't have to go to work!

NIce pics Loon!

Where do you live in Ontario? I live in Gaspe which gets Colorado Low's and Nor'Easters from the Eastern US. So we can get up to 500cm of snow in a winter! So far, before Jan, we have received 100cm!!!

Shmudda: I do shovel it on average 2-3 times a winter. The house faces the North (the picture is of the back) so the snow blows off of the front and lands on the back. Betweem my deck and basement entrance the snow was 5 feet deep. When I shovel the roof I leave 6-7 inches so that I don't damage the shingles. I have never had an ice damn. The snow melts fast enough in the day and cools down fast enough that ice doesn't accumulate. I never get ice (R50 in attic) other than the little bit from the sun once it gets warmer.

I agree. And I am on parental leave for another 4 months (staying at home with the family at 93% of my wage). No rush to go to work ;)

Wow that's a great bennie! I have 5 kids and would have had years off in Canada, eh? ;) Here I had to go back to work or no $$.. Now we are allowed to use FMLA but it is UNPAID so not much of a bennie unless you're loaded which I am not.. Great pics by both you and Loon!

Loon: Nice! Beautiful part of the country. My wife's cousin is at Queen's right now working on her PhD.

Ray: in Canada there is a program called Parental leave. It entitles parents to share up to 12 months off after the birth of baby or adoption of a child. Normally you get 55% of your wage. However, in Quebec it is different (everything is..). They have their own provincial program for which everyone contributes to on their income. It allows fathers to have at least 5 weeks off and mother's to have 16 weeks and the couple can split 36 other weeks. My employer tops up the parental leave allowance to 93%. So you could have been off for about 4 years with pay should your wife not work or give you her leave :D
