It was 13 degrees at 10 this morning, 8 at 11:30, 6 at 12:15, 5 at 4:00, 2 at 4:30, don't know what it is now and don't intend to find out. Am not going back out tonight if I can help it.
Lit a fire yesterday evening, not very big...less than 1/2 firebox, burned overnight with air completely closed. Opened the air early this morning to burn down the (plentiful) coals, because I wanted to get the stove cool enough to tighten the screw holding the smoke screen (screen had come loose and was hanging down quite low). Coals finely burned down to embers at about 2 this afternoon. Worked on the stove for a bit (tighten screw, empty ashes, etc.), walked the dog. House temp got down to 60 degrees...not bad with the amount I was in and out carrying firewood, walking the dog, running errands, etc., and last smallish fire lit yesterday evening. Loaded the stove a bit more than half way, got it roaring, engaged the cat and closed the air down completely. It's been burning for less than 1 1/2 hours now, stove top temp is about 425, house is 64. I'm happy with a 4 degree temperature rise in that time, with temperatures frigid to begin with and plummeting, and a brisk Northern breeze off the lake. After being outside a lot today, I am relly comfortable in here. Should get up to 70 on this load of wood. Be interesting to see how cold it is at sunrise when I walk Artan.
