I want to have a storage container of some sort to store a few pieces of wood (maybe one or two days worth of burn) inside the house.

I am in the middle of building an addition that will have a Jotul Castine stove in it and in designing the room one of the more thoughtful areas i am putting into the room is with the stove/hearth area. So a part of this area will be possiably this wood storage container.

Sure i could get a sling bag, sure i could put the wood in a rubbermaid container but sure I could put out a little effort to make a container that people say - wow....

I have a friend that loves to build things out of wood for others and is always looking for ideas...

Anyone got any???
Photos would be appreiciated if possiable...

I simply do not like storing wood in the house. Bring it in, it goes into the stove.

Like I said: Four splits stacke on the hearth north-south and four splits stacked east-west on top of those. When they're gone I go to the rack on the covered porch and bring in eight more. I too don't like keeping a lot of wood in the house.

I have a wood cart which is basically a nice looking dolly with 2 tall rods on the front of the carrying base which creates a support wall so the wood can be stacked securely. Plow and Hearth sells them

I store enough wood for about two or three days in a round steel hoop wood rack. The rack sits on a tile floor so I can easily sweep up the sawdust, bark chips, and general dirt that falls off the wood. i have not had problems with bugs in the house as a result of wood storage indoors.

If you're building a new stove room I'd include a large area of tile or stone floor surrounding the stove. Even if you're very careful you will have dirt, occasional flaming embers, ash, etc. on the floor, and those things aren't compatible with carpet or hardwood.

Here is a pic of my set up. I put in a rack this year that I built from 2x4 s and a old sheet of OSB. Spay painted it to match the room a little better. It is just shy of 4'x4' and hold enough wood for 5-7 days depending on burning needs. Warms the wood up nicely after getting a little snow and water on it. Just have to pay attension to clearances.

The stinkbugs LOVE me bringing in wood.:)

I wish that my house had a place for inside wood storage but the layout doesn't permit that.

My next house will be designed around the fireplace/wood stove area.

Once when I was shopping for a house, I saw a place that had what looked like a fireplace next to a built in stove. It was an arrangement where the wood could be loaded into an alcove from the outside, and the inside had a cast iron "coal furnace" door, for want of a better word, that could be opened to gain access to the wood. It didn't look like it could hold more than 10-15 splits, but it was kind of neat.

It was similar to this, but with the cast-iron doors.

We looked at several houses with fireplaces that had that area next to the fireplace, built into the stone or brickwork. Usually the other side (the loading door) was in an attached garage.
