Minor score, and a little homework.

Two different scores that I saw about six miles from the house, a couple trailer loads total.

Load 1: Never got any before but from what I've seen here, looks to be Sliver Maple. Roasted a chain on some metal in the stump. Grrrr.... I should swear off the yard trees but I really wanted to get some more soft Maple drying.

The other guy had few Mulberry logs that were already cut up. There was a small trunk of what appears to be White Ash; I'll ask him about that later.

Load 2: All Silver. Big load, didn't want to go back.

Unloaded it today. Tomorrow I gotta take a trailer load of fresh meat into town for feeding the Buck 91.

Then I started on a White Ash out back. 19" DBH. It was dead and I had my eye on it, but was wondering how I was going to get it down without damaging a couple of White Oaks nearby. I came out one day, and didn't see the tree. Turns out it had fallen in the opposite direction from where it was leaning, sparing the Oaks any damage. I love it when that happens. So I couldn't be too mad that the top of the Ash broke off and went into a ravine...
I need to get lots of Ash split and stacked; I'm behind the eight ball again, thanks to the Buck 91.

Looks like solid wood, right there.

Couldn't pick it up today; Daylight was fading by the time I got it cut. I'll post a pic of the haul when I bring it up to the processing area...

I saw a bunch of rounds today on the side of the road that I was tempted to stop and grab but I didn't want to get in trouble.
If its there on Monday when the construction crew is there then i'll ask about it.

The Mulberry and Maple was at residences, the Ash is on our property. We are close to the East Coast...of the Mississippi. We don't have all the good wood but we have plenty.
On the county assessor's website, I can find out who owns the land if I see wood, and I can then contact them.

hmm.. Wonder if I can see that info for here. The wife and I were driving around today and I seriously spent half my time looking at down trees wondering how I could get access to them. She thinks I'm a freak at this point and I'm not a fraction as bad as most on this site. I've got geothermal heating cooling now so technically I don't even need to burn wood except 20-30 days a year to keep the electric back up from kicking on yet I feel empty when there isnt a fire going in the evening.

Nice score! I'm STILL burning silver maple during the daytime hours, I had a MOUNTAIN of it in the stacks from several years back. I know it's a softer wood and all, but I really like burning it. Smells good when burning, burns hot and leaves nothing but powdery ash. Got a big one scheduled to come down soon......looks like more for three years down the road!

Good looking score there.Mulberry is one of my favs,cut a small amount yesterday in fact.Some of my 2 yr+ will be mixed with White Oak & burned in the next day or so.Silver Maple is great too,always like to get some every year.Dries faster than anything around here,puts out good heat for coolish fall,spring days.Nice to mix in also.

That cold front blew in (and I mean BLEW) last night right on schedule.42 degrees at 7PM,19 at 1030 & its 9 degrees with 0 windchill right now.May hit 11 tommorow if we're lucky.

From the reports here, I expect it to burn pretty much like the Red Maple I'm using now. If I don't burn a full load, I'll at least throw a couple of kindling splits of the Maple or Cherry in to kick off a reload of higher-heat wood. I like it so much that I don't want to run out. Gettin' low, that's why I went after that yard bird. Yeah, I know, wait and there will be plenty in the Spring storms. I saw it just lying there on the ground, a lot of it cut to length, and I couldn't help myself, I had to scrounge it!

Oof! Not quite that bad here, but probably single digits Mon. night, windy in the aft/evening. Couple days with highs in the low 20s. That's pretty cold for my blood. I've got wood to split and stack, dammit! I guess I'll have to work faster to keep from freezing.

Up to 29 here and 77 in the house with a small fire but the sun was baking. Winds have slowed some,was blowing pretty hard y-day and earlier. Stove's munching on some beech and got some locust and red elm set for tonight single digits expected.

Stove fodder, transfixed in terror as they stare into the gaping maw, or is it the cavernous craw, of the horrific yet beautiful Buck 91. They await their fate, stacked in a row that I guesstimate to be a half cord or a bit more.

Now what to do? The game is over... Maybe I'll watch Downton Abbey with the wife. I'm not too invested in the plot lines but I keep thinking we'll eventually get to see the guys that saw and split the wood to feed the 35 fireplaces.

Me and the 6-pounder went to work on the Ash this afternoon. Decent weather, sunny and 25. The wind wasn't too bad down in the woods, and it slowed down some later. I'm kinda tired.
The splits didn't feel super-heavy, but not dry either. A split about 2/3 of the way up and one low on the trunk both metered out to about 24%. Not sure if it can get under 18% by Fall but we'll see. I'm trying to decide weather to save my breeziest stacking spot for some other Ash which may be wetter. Biggest splits are about 6x4"...

The wood is in good shape. Might be one more good cut off the stump, and if the broken top is solid there's a bit more yet. Gotta be over half a cord for sure...

I'll post another pic when I get that top cut up and see how much it stacks out to, total. Maybe tomorrow, it's a bit chilly today. But I may walk out every so often and whack a few Red Oak rounds.
