what kind of wood ?

brought home some wood that i dont know what it is. pulled this out of a middle of a 42 acre woods in SE michigan. it is a hard wood, no smell , pale reddish purple color , its heavy and dry when i split it.

Beech is first guess, note the fleck from the medullary rays. Second guess would be Hard Maple. This wood has been dead for sometime regardless of specie it will not be long and it will burn wonderfully!

My first thought was sycamore, but beech and some maples are plausible too. Wish the pics were sharper...

i've been burning dogwood over the last few days. Wow, is it ever nice. It is pinkish inside, but that split came off a pretty nice side round. I had some good size dead dogwoods to clean up but they are only 4 or 5 inches in diameter.

That's the best firewood known to man...free firewood! Have you put a M.M. on it yet? I'd be willing to bet that the upper parts of that dead thing are ready to burn.

Yeah, that's what I usually find here. Dry, it burn great. Semi-dry, not as good. If you don't need it right now, stack it and let it dry out some more. Those things take forever to die. The whole trunk can be rotted out but there will be one thin strip of bark feeding the upper part of the tree, and it'll still be growing leaves.

isnt dog wood a flowering tree ? and i thought it was a lighter color wood. this was not that big of a tree and was laying on the gound in the middle of the woods surrounded by oaks , ash and hickorys. the dark spots are just dirty from cracks. now i have to go back to the spot and check it out if i can remember were it was .

I'm going with a hard maple that has long been dead, grown in heavy canopy on well drained soil/rocky soil, but tilts to the west a few degrees.

Just to confuse it even more, I would say Red Oak, but I'm not expert, but I do know my oaks well. The grian of that wood looks like classic red oak.

Oak, Hickory and White Ash forest here too. Dogwood all over the place out there. Yes, they flower in early Spring. A lot of guys won't mess with 'em since they are small but I get all I can. Output is on par with the Hickories.

This was the only stick that I could easily grab, stacked with some BL. Color didn't really come through in the pic, but it is the classic pink. Note the texture compared to your splits. And you see that white stuff in the center a lot on the dead ones.

Here's a good pic of the scaly bark on a 7-inch downer, just off a trail, that I need to get.

Bark is absolutely dogwood. I cut one down earlier this morning
