I have looked at several used epa approved stoves ,all under 3 yrs old. I have yet to find one that didnt look overheated or just plain kinda cheap. Please help me. I am used to an old fisher. I want something I can cook on if i need to. I have been really liking the englander 30 looks, and price, but does it perform?I have heard mixed reviews. Can you cook on it? does it perform? I have an old leaky house ,prob 1500 sq foot. Please give me suggestions or help me pick a good stove. thanks to all of you.

I helped a friend install an englander 30 in his house about a year and a half ago. This is his second season with it and I have seen it in operation. I can testify under oath i have never seen any thing like it. that thing throws the heat. I grew up on a fisher type steel step stove and currently heat with a fisher insert. Sure they look a little thin but i guess with the baffles in the top and firebrick in the lower firebox area they dont seem to have any problems. I dont know how it will look in ten years but for the money there is no doubt it is a real power house. The only problem he has with his is that it is a bit too much heat if its in the 20s here thats pretty cold they sleep with a couple of windows open and the stove turned down for all night burn. The only reason i dont have one is my wife says i have to remodel the kitchen before i build the hearth out enough to put in the stove. I wish it would handle a bit longer wood only because my dad and i share a wood shed and we both currently burn long wood. The englander uses about 18" logs which is typical of most newer stoves of that size. I dont have much experience with any other new style stoves but i have seen many pre EPA steel stoves in operation. I'm here to tell ya. You will not be disappointed

And yes it will boil a large pot of water in short order.

I have a leaky old house as well. Where will the stove be located? It will perform far better if it is NOT a basement install.

Packed full, the 30 will give you:
Up to 12 hours of temps over 250 degrees.
8+ hours of temps over 300 degrees
5 hours of temps over 450 degrees.
4 hours of temps over 550 degrees.

Yes, you can cook on the stove. I do not. I do not cook on any of my stoves. I make enough mess with the wood. I do not need to introduce food to add to the mess. :)

It is simple to use. I would buy one again. If you like how it looks, there is very little difference in terms of heat and efficiency when compared to other non-cat stoves of the same size. The Pacific Energy Summit and T6 stoves probably offer a bit more efficiency and would probably provide longer burns when compared to the burn times I listed above.

Drolet, US Stove, and a few other budget steel stove manufacturers make stoves similar to the 30. All function about the same and offer about the same amount of heat and burn times. The 30 seems to have the advantage when it comes to price, usually.

Great for a non cat stove. a good choice

What are some of your concerns? Tell us about the mixed reviews. Most folks are pretty satisfied with their 30's. If not, it is usually due to operator error, poor wood, or poor flue. That's the main thing I would be concerned about. Does your wood and flue meet requirements?

Went from a fisher to a Summit. Can cook, heat and still use 1/3 less wood. You do not see many used PE stoves, people keep them. I love mine. tim
