Anyone know if I can use griddle gasket on the fireback? Its the same size but the griddle gasket has the SS mesh jacket...... I wasnt ready for this one :(

I don't like the wire mesh stuff even on the griddle. It doesn't seal well.

The griddle gasket is not the same size as the one used for the fire back.

Reckless has the same 2550 Encore that I do. Fireback and griddle both take 5/16 on this particular model, but the griddle is wirewound.

In my case I could never get a good seal with the wirewound so I actually use the same 5/16 rope on both fireback and griddle, and just deal with changing the griddle gasket frequently (every other year or so).

Interesting. The gasket used on the 0028 is a larger diameter than the griddle gasket.

I went back and forth on the reinforced gasket (since I had it on the Intrepid, Vigilant, Defiant, and Encore). I had the same problems as you, but I went back to the griddle gasket. It's a pain to work with, but I managed to get a good seal on the Encore.

Thats the tricky part every time a VC stove thread comes up... How many different model numbers are there for the Encore and Defiant series? I think its at least 6 different variations of each... And the answers are different for each one :(

One of their many poor decisions.

Wire mesh is all I got. Can't I just cut off the wire mesh?

Ace hardware has the gasket material.

A local stove shop would as well.

I'm a firm believer in doing it the right way when it comes to VC maintenance. You don't want to have to do it again.

Agree 1000%. These stoves are tricky enough when perfect. Cut corners and you will curse the thing later.

I have a 2550 I regasketed a few months ago. I'm not super happy with the wirewound griddle seal and may try using rope. I keep trying to replace the entire stove but just can't seem to make up my mind on which one so I just keep messing with this dang VC.

That's my problem. I inherited the stove for free so its hard to justify thousands on a new stove when a hundred bucks in parts will do... Plus its a tight install.

I grew up with a 70s vintage VC that still runs at my Dads place, so I really want to see good things from this stove, but alas...

This "thousands" that you refer to. I am unfamiliar with this. ;lol

Seriously, searchtempest.com is the way to go.

Went to Ace and got a rope kit with glue for $8, thanks for the info :) got it back together and all fired up. 1 problem... my upper refractory box was split in half when i took it out :( I just put it back in the way it came out b\c it didnt seem to have any fire damage in the split and Im not sure how long its been like that for. Guess ill be taking that apart again in a week or two XC

My griddle has a pretty worn wire gasket now BUT it isnt leaking. I will replace it with the new wire gasket I have in the spring and see what happens if not I bought extra 5/16ths with no mesh from ace XD thanks BAR!!
