Burning Hunk
Nov 28, 2006
124
Warwick, RI
It's bouncing around 60 here in RI this afternoon, I knew this was going to happen but decided to keep the FV going to see how it would draw/burn on, to keep the house dried out and to avoid relighting it tonight when the wind is supposed to be very strong. Clearly the stove is not drawing/burning even close to as well as it was with outside temps of 40 and below.

Should I see this big a decrease in efficiency with a 20 degree differential in exterior temps? It's not really a problem since the house remains comfortable and I am not (at least yet since winds are only starting to build now)getting any backdrafting into the house.

It if fairly mild here in Westport harbor with windows occaisionally gusting. No downdrafts however. Stove is chugging away but I don't need more heat so cut back on air until it gets cooler tonight. Local channels are predicting high gusts tonight with rains heavy at times. Fair sailin! Maybe see you this summer on the Block.

All I can say is that my draft goes way down when it warms up. In fact, I shut the stove down last night and went on the oil burner till it cools down again. That might be until Friday, unless the winds blow hard enough here. Just a breeze right now blowing out of the southwest. Can't wait till it gets colder. Having the oil burner on is killing me.

Sailor, I've never run a stove when it has been 60 outdoors, so can't give an answer.

I lit a small fire last night at over 60*. 17' stack was drawing fine on the Fv and didn't need to pre-heat the flue. I could have gotten as hot a stove as I wanted. I'm going to attribute this mainly to the unimpeded flow of air from outside the house to the stove intake. ;lol

So I'm not the only one? Funny, never gave a rats ass about the oil burner running before. Now that I have a stove, if I as much as think about it, I get aggrivated!

Haha! If that burner turns on at 4am it will wake me up out of a dead sleep. Not that it's noisy, but my ear is tuned to when money is being burned up a flue now. I'll go down and stoke the stove before I let it run any longer than needed. Fortunately, it is still 53° outside here and it hasn't gone on much.

True, it is warm out. Let's face it. Come winter we are addicted to our woodstoves and so what????? Fire up, sweat, be warm and don't worry about it. It will be cold soon enough.

I can't seen you and Mrs. Savage sitting around in 60* temps! It gets into the 60's in here something is getting burned!

60's inside and there is a good chance the fire will be burning. 60 outside? Probably well into the 70's inside; no fire.
