I was driving down the road the other day past a county park and noticed all the dead trees laying around. I figured I'd search the county park website to see if I could call or email them to ask if I can take some of that wood. This is what I did find:

I never knew this kind of stuff goes on. $35 for a full month of any three parks I chose? Sounds like a win-win and I don't mind the work. Thoughts?

I think that's a great idea. You're saving the taxpayer the cost of a clearing crew, and getting some fuel in the process, and you get to spend some time in the park. All good...

No...never even thought about it. Then again, a few years back NY shut all the parks statewide due to budget cuts. One town nearby has a huge park right on a main road, and their yearly festival was coming up. So, the mayor of said town got on his tractor with a belly mower and went and started mowing the grass, which hadn't been cut because of the closure. And don't ya know, the state sent the sheriff to ask him to stop, because it was state property!! Even the sheriff thought it was stupid, but he was just doing his job. Somehow he didn't get there until at least the front part was all cut though. Freaking NYS. Idiots. So anyway, because of that, I imagine they'd not be allowing any such "cleaning" of the parks.

I have heard of that before. We snowmobile in Jackman, ME. After the tree cutters finish a cut, you can get a permit from the lumber company to cut the remnants. Not a bad deal when you consider much of the land is posted.

Here on LI you can cut at Hither Hills state park in Montauk. All the locals were going regularly though,so there wasnt much there that wasnt a PIA to get. I havent been there in a while though,so im sure theres some sandy debris. Im suprised theyre so unaccomidating upstate.

Was just looking into this sort of thing yesterday. Nothing close enough to home to make it really pay off though but $20/ cord for a roadside lot seems like a good deal.

Many National and State forests have some kind of firewood deal at a pretty good price. Mostly dead standing or down trees. It's where I get 90% of my wood.

Wish they had that in my County, spoke to a Ranger recently about that and they have a "let it turn to dirt" rule, apparently they also do child programs about how a fallen tree turns to dirt.
