Currently burning two year CSS wood the local landscaper provided. Found this on one of the splits...

First cut hit the buried screw, the bottom of the screw is ground away. Wonder how the saw worked after that? One of the problems with cutting & splitting "backyard" wood.

ps: The exposed part of that screw is about 2 inches long and a half inch wide...

For sure that is a hazard and also why we never would take a log from a yard or fence row at the sawmill. We would even turn away walnut. Not worth it.

don't they use metal detectors at the mill?

Found similar iron in some of the Red Oak I processed post-Sandy. Chainsaw chain you can resurrect but mill blades are a different story.

In the last week I've found three of those in the firebox of my Buck 80. I've been burning some ash I got from a Craig's List ad. A lady had 11 ash trees ranging from 10" to 23" taken down in her back yard. The tree service cut the branches and left the rest at her request. I cut all the rest and brought it home, split and stacked it. Never once hit anything with a chain or wedge, but it was for sure there! I should have bought a lotto ticket just after cutting it all!

I found this in an Ash round a few years ago with my Fiskars . Not only did I miss it with the saw, but my buddy milled the log that this was cut off of.
