In The Woods
I took a ride around some of our property, mother nature put some small stuff down and some big stuff way up on the hill that runs the length of the brook.

Pic 6757 came off of 6758 (I.D.?), pic 6759 is the junk wood I'll need to clear so I can get to the Maple,6762 is a dead standing beech,6763 came off of 6764,6765 I.D. needed,6766 is ironwood,6769 is on top of the hill that runs the length of the brook (I'm guessing it's a Maple)6770 is the maple not zoomed in.

That hill the big Maple is on will have more wood down, just not sure what it will be. We still have about three more areas that need checking once the snow is gone.

Time for some work ZAP. What is that saying? If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.

Looking good zap. Still surprised how little snow you have left. Looks more like our place now.

Gas, had family up from the Cuse this weekend so we ate out Fri. & Sat. night then caught two hockey games (Cheel & SLU tonight) depending on the weather I might start cutting the third week of Feb.

Sav, the last melt took most of the snow, we have ice with about two inches of snow on top. Certain spots in the woods have more, just like riding on rocks the snow is so frozen.

That's a tough one Zap with the moss growing on it and what looks to be a red cast. Just to throw a guess I will say some type of soft maple. Found a few shots with a search of "maple bark pictures" look similar

I think you're correct, have one in that area that is topped off so I'll grab that this spring.

zap

The one pictured is good, have one just up the hill from that, it's topped off. I would like that if it was hard maple, once the buds start coming out I'll have my answer, red bud soft maple, if the twigs are tan & brown with the buds the same color we have hard maple.

We had a lot of wind too, helped the stacks dry out a bit I hope.
I also went for a walk yesterday and have a few cords of wood waiting for me. I was also glad to see the weak tops of some standing deads are now laying on the ground. I need to remember to take my camera next time as there are 2 trees uprooted and will require some careful cutting, one an oak and the other a maple I think.
Zap, I wish I had the time you have to be able to spend more time in the woods!

I checked out some of the dead standing with bad tops, still up, guess mother nature will get them this spring. We did some uprooted trees that were hung up in other trees, we have one nice cherry left that is uprooted an hung up.

I wish I had more time I could spend in the woods, just the weekends lately. The first thing my wife ask me this morning was are you going back in today. We have a few areas we are blocked from going in,(downed dead pine blocking the trail) so once it warms up I'll start on that. It gets hit hard when we have high winds so I need to check if mother nature put some good stuff down.

Right zap. It is that time of the year when we typically get some rock hard crust on the snow. Not good for the wildlife for sure and hard on the machines.

The deer look in good shape for Feb, counted 30 yesterday on my ride, it looks like they are calling for cooler temps for this month but above average temps for March in our area.

It is surprising that they look good here too. I was afraid for them because of no acorns last fall and no apples either. But they do look to be in good shape right now.

The last warm weather we had helped them out, uncovered some small trees they've been eating on the west facing hills. March can be a bad month for the deer if we get a foot of the heavy wet snow, the coyotes usually get some kills in during that month from what I've seen in the past years.

Zap your always after wood...........good job
I'm looking for another 3 cord (not face) by the end of May, before would be okay. Then I would like another two cord of shoulder season wood cut, lots of Hemlock down so it's cleaning up the lot.

That sounds like a great time ZAP. I am hoping to get into the woods Monday and Tuesday. Sitting here hoping San Fransisco can win this game. But they just fumbled. ;hm

I see were in for a couple of cold nights (-19 to -28 with the windchill for tonight) glad we have some beech ready to go.

Man, they almost came back for the win. Oh we'll. I am glad for most of the Ravens.
