I decided to get the stuff I had on hand split and stacked today. Iron & Oak 22 Ton rental from Aubochon Hardware. This thing is fast. Get it in the right position first Sav!

Nothing like using hydraulics. I saved, and saved to go buy a Huskee 22 ton splitter....it's not thew biggest, baddest splitter, but considering I'd rent 5-6 times a year at $125 a pop, it make sense to purchase. Now, I can split when I have time, versus getting a big pile of rounds and spending an entire weekend splitting.....next up, saving to buy a lawn tractor to mow, and tow 'cause moving the splitter by hand is getting old....especially up the slight incline in my yard.

Used mine yesterday Gas (Swisher 22ton), the cold start feature on mine (disengages the hydraulics when starting in cold weather) makes it a piece of cake. It was in the mid 20's when I split that wood, started up on the first pull and it hasn't been ran since October!

And yes, I keep mine in the Backwoods Savage position, too!

BB, if your handy, you can usually get a good used lawn inexpensively. Tell us what your looking for it to do ie. how much mowing, pulling, snow duty etc.... and we'll suggest what to look for.

Where do you buy a used lawn? ;lol The spot I am working in is in the shade and getting zero sun right now. Time to warm up for a few minutes. Scotty, this thing has a Honda engine on it and it started the second pull. It is quick, I am not sure if it is the fast cycle or not, but I am thinking it is. I also noticed I can leave the throttle on half way and it is much less noise and I do not lose any speed. ? At least it does not seam like I do anyway. I am used to borrowing my neighbors splitter, and hand made job that will go through anything. But is really, really slow. So slow I can not borrow it anymore. They are great people. Bret, this store has had one for rent since they opened. Beer belly, this one cost $40 dollars a half day and $60 dollars for a whole day. I asked him if I needed to have it back before the store closed tonight. Nope, tomorrow, same time. Nice. For the once or twice I need it a year I am having a hard time convincing myself to spend $2200 on a nice one. Toes are warm again. Back out I go.

I rented an I&O back in the fall and I loved that beast. I am trying to figure out how to come up with the money to buy one. The only thing that I would love to have on it was a cradle for when I was using it horizontally, that would have made life a lot easier.

I found a JD on CL without a deck for $225 (asking price), but the Wife wants me to go new.....been burned too many times....so, save, save, save:cool:

How much can you drag in that neon sled? Inquiring minds want to know... ;)

Good job Gasifier
Hydraulics are sweet ;)

Got a picture of the stack of splits :)

Bogy, I stacked a very little bit, then quickly realized I better throw it in a pile and keep moving. I will be lucky to get through it all by dark. Here is a shot of the first pile made this morning. Break over, back out I go.

That neon sled is just for dragging the rounds from the thicket to the edge of the field/trail. But if you are real careful, you can get quite a bit in one haul. As for the homemade sleigh (I call her The Mule) I can put a heap in there........but it is hard to get stopped once you get 'er moving!!

Gas, I rarely run ours at full speed either. If I happen to have a tough one then I'll open it up, otherwise, about 3/4 throttle.

Just finished. About half of it stacked. The ones left standing are just over the max 24.5" length ;(. The hot choc. My wife made was good. Now time for a shower and homemade spaghetti and meatballs!!!

Great job gasman! I hear those Iron&Oak splitters are well made but for 60 bucks rental I think you have the right idea.. Talked to a coworker who lives 2 miles from me and he is gonna drop off his 22 ton so I can split what my 5 ton electric can't handle.. I do like how quiet the electric splitters are and they cost little to operate too..

Nice job Gas.....feels good to be finished up with a job, but if you're anything like me you're probably chompin' at the bit to get the next one started!

Yup. The splitter is in the yard and hooked to the truck for returning first thing tomorrow. Then I think I need to build a couple of more bins for storing more wood. Then maybe head into the woods for some more!
