No, not talking about my buddy Joe in the picture, either! He standing next to a job we just got this past weekend where the powerline subcontractors dropped a HUGE silver maple in a customers yard. Well, local scroungers came and took the easy stuff but left the 10' long monster trunk in the yard. We'll be taking that out of there (probably around a half-cord or more in that trunk) and and also removing the 45' spruce next to his house....

My buddy and helper Joe is around 6'1 and 240lbs to give you an idea of the size of that lump of wood. All twisty, knarled-up and nasty, it will end up a heap of uglies for sure!!

Saturday may be the day.....

Be some good btu's once split. I like having some Silver Maple in the stacks.
yessir, me too! That and ash are all I used this whole past heating season for daytime burns. Using locust and white oak for overnighters.

I love having silver maple in the stacks! Lots of it, too!

Big tree with lots of wood for the locals.
Now the pro's have to come in & deal with the "left overs".

I like left overs :)

The snow you had sure went fast with the rain.
Hope you get some more so you can keep the snowmobile in use ;)

Pretty much sums up my burning this winter. Although I used Ash & Black Locust for my overnighters.. I also had some Bradford Pear that I burned this year. Surprising how good that was for daytime burns also

Looks like some nice firewood, what saw & bar you plan on running?

Too bad it would probably crack but a thick cookie from the first pic would make a for a sweet tabletop.
The spruce looks like 1/4 of the work for the same amount of wood;)

yeah I'm hoping for more snow too, Dave......but it isn't looking good! You're having some crazy weather up that way too, I see!!

Zappy I think I'll run the ported 051 with that 42" bar on this log to get it busted up. Maybe use one of the 041 Supers to rip the slabs into halves and quarters for the splitter. Knock some of the cobwebs off of my vintage Stihls........;)

I wish I had that 090 of yours!! I'd rip a couple benches out of this monster!!

There is no replacement for displacement
you are correct! When it comes to really big wood, you need big bars. When you run big bars, you need big power.....

While the 051's 89cc are good enough for this job, the 090's 137cc would be the cat's azz! I have an 075 also (111cc) that needs an overhaul as she's tired, it will be getting a Woods port and squishband removal someday when I get time (maybe never, the way things have been going!). The 051 will get the job done for me, not the fastest saw in the shed but lots of low end torque.....

How'd they beat a pro like you to the punch? Oh well, I guess we have to take what we can get sometimes even if its not the cream at the top.

Oh, I'm gonna have fun gettin' that outta there! As an added bonus, there's metal in it.....blue streaks if you look at the one top.....

Yay!

x2 on a 3" slab off the top end for a table. If I was visiting my sister this week(State College) I would volunteer as a laborer/gopher/wego for just one slab. I would make a dining room table out of it!

Obviously photo evidence will be required!! have fun Scotty

Get your butt out here, Bob! It'll be a great time! And I'll let you take a slab with ya. If you ever come out this way, make sure to get in touch. Soon we'll be cutting trees every damm weekend, we've got a HECK of a pile of them lined up!

Where are you located Scott - I will certainly look you up next time I travel that way and I will have the saw on board!!

I'm just north of Altoona, just south of State College!! Right in between!!

We will meet for sure - I know right when you are. My sisters home is in Port Matilda and she works for the school district. My brother in law owns Mikes appliance store in State College. I am not sure when I will get out there next but I will look you up before I am headed your way.

There has got to be some interesting wood grain in that knarly chunk. Really should try and mill it up. May be surprised at what handsome slabs can fetch you. Maybe enough for as new saw!

If it was hard maple or oak, I'd do just that. But being silver maple, not so crazy about it. I may slab a couple pieces of the top. We'll see what mood I'm in that day and how sharp the chain stays. There's some metal in that old girl......
