Maybe I am reading more into it than I should, but if the guy has an actual compression tester for a chainsaw, I suspect it has been rebuilt. Maybe he bought it blown up and rebuilt it, or pieced together from years of accumulated parts to come up with a working model.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. Some rebuilt saws run just as well as a new one. And if done properly, will last for many years.

Compression testers are relatively inexpensive and not specific to chainsaw work.

It's pretty common practice now to post a shot with the compression tester when selling a saw. I wouldn't read to much into that. ;)

The saw was clean, but not "too clean" if ya know what I mean.

$650 + $40 shipping for a 25-30 year-old saw. _g

I've had the itch for an 038 mag forever. But for that kinda money....the itch will just have to go unscratched . Nice looking saw though.

With the line-up you have, I doubt you'd be impressed. Kinda like a stock big-block in a pickup vs the new diesels. Nostalgia aplenty but it would sit on the self with a 044 and a worked over 460 in the stable.

You're likely correct. But it's still a saw that i'd like to own .

Minor topic re-direct....

What do you guys think of an 038 super? I dont have any "big" saws, but I do have an 026 and an 028 Super... (and an Eager Beaver, but we dont talk about that....)

It's an upgrade for you for sure. Very strong 60cc class saw.

Good to know, as I think one is going to follow me home.... has side chain adjuster but still says made in West Germany.

Wowser. Winning bid is $650. I'd rather spend another $70 and have a shiny new 362.

Looks like one of my cleaning jobs...lol Take me about a month to clean on that well.

Never underestimate the power of nostalgia. :)

I'd take a 362 over that 038 too, even tho the 038 Mag is 70cc+

I got a clean 038AV Super w/ 20" bar for $300 in a package deal when I bought the Timberwolf. It makes a nice supplement to the 361.

Yeah, the 038 followed me home tonight. No chance to play with it yet, but fired up on the third pull, looks like it has seen some mild use on the homeowner side of things. Looking forward to cleaning it up and putting it in some wood!

OK, quick question...

This saw came with a Stihl full chisel chain on it, no bumper links. Trying to figure out what type of chain it is, the only thing I can find is that it says "E4" on the links. Im guessing its Rapid Super, but Im just curious if its Klassic. Any pointers? Most of my other chains are Carlton, so this one is new to me. Looks like someone filed on the top of the cutters with a flat file.... _g

Have a 038AV at work. We use it to cut trees that have fallen on our roads or the fence line. Works fine, but I didn't think it was anything special.... like "wow this saw really cuts!". I'd compare it to a 290 as far as cutting performance, maybe slightly better.

33RSC or the new type is just 33RS. You can get Stihl chain without bumper links in semi or full chisel. 33RMC or 33RM is the prefix for semi-chisel yellow label chain. All chain sold in yellow label boxes is bumper-link free chain.

Even a plain jane 038AV (no super or magnum) should shame a MS290 through anything over 12". Big difference in both displacement, and the HP those saws put out.

Thanks MM.

I didnt see any yellow or green link, just that it was a full chisel chain with no bumper links, and that E4 on it. Gonna try out the Timberline on it, since it looks like it needs a little bit of love.

I have the air filter in the ultrasonic cleaner now, gonna clean up the rest of the saw, then proceed to get it dirty again!
