Not very efficient, but it produces some spectacular results!

maple syrup?

Yessiree! Just sweetening the pans tonight. A lot more work than the wood stove. Only 7-10 minute burns :)

Nectar of the Gods. Once or twice I though about tapping a couple sugar maples on the property. Only thing stopping me is the fact that I'd have no clue what I'm doing ;lol . Must taste even better when you make it yourself.

Watch out! Once you tap that first tree it quickly gets out of control! We started with one five gallon bucket, now we are up to 200 taps, an evaporator, a new sugar house and a whole lot of fun!

The wood supply is also of concern. We can easily get up to 2.5-3 cord in a season going through the evaporator. Luckily my brother builds post and beam structures, so we get all the Douglas Fir ends to use in the evaporator.

P.s. funny you use the term Nectar of the Gods.....we say that all the time!

Lucky guy. I love fresh made grade B syrup. We used to be able to buy it from the local farm in CT. None sold out here so we do Trader Joe's. :(

:) I could pour a gallon of maple syrup on a big pile of pancakes and inhale it in about 20 seconds.

There are a couple of places within a short drive that produce it, and I recall class field trips (way way back, many years ago) where we used to go visit the maple shacks and get to taste samples hot from the trays.

We can still buy the local product in many of the stores around here, but I don't get to dip my finger in the pan. What a cool hobby that would be. Another thing on my to-do list (list is getting long...)

Good for you remkel. Soon all the evaporators will be going strong. Hopefully a better run than last year.

Man I really want to do some syrup this year but I'm afraid I ain't gonna be able to.......too much to do on the house project. Not to mention the lack of snow makes it very hard for me to access the sugar maples in the woods on my neighbors farm (I use the snowmobile when conditions allow, takes waaay more time to do it walking). I may do a handful of trees at a local 1700's inn near our house (some really big sugar maples down there, all in walking distance of the driveway), we'll watch the weather and decide by Sunday if I'm going to do it or not....

I still have 20 gallons left over from last year/year before in the basement, so it won't kill me to pass this year. But I really enjoy doing it, and it's good excersize!

Wow your season is a lot earlier than ours...makes me a little more than jealous! Didn't tap last year, figured the season was going to be a bust and I was right....unfortunate for the big guys that had a lot of time and money invested.

Well, boiled off about 120 gallons last night and still had half the tank left. My father is doing tonight's boil and we think we have another 120 gallons of sap in the woods. We have been producing about 1/2 gallon of sap per tap all this week, so if that is any indication, we should be able to make our goal of 50 gallons, but my father is hoping for 70.

It is a great way to get the community, the family and many friends gathered in one place.

So, is this steam or smoke coming out of this stack? :)

This may be sacrilegious in the maple syrup world...but can this be used to make into alcohol?...

Well it aint Rocket Surgery ;). Drill hole in tree, insert tap, hang bucket, collect sap, boil until it tastes like heaven. Now get to it!
You can do a small amount indoors, but it's best to have a vent hood that exhausts outside. Propane grill works too.
Just 20 taps or so can keep you in syrup for a year (depending on the year, the tree & your consumption of course).
