Craiglist Ad...Any thoughts

There is a post in the local CL for what seems to be a lot of wood for cheap. According to the cord calculator and the measurements provided there is over 10 cords. Cost is $400. I just was curious as to what others thought about the ad.

Looks like really easy pickins! I'd offer $300 cash. You never know, maybe some rot in there and softwoods.
Be ready to haul it out of there quickly.

B/C the piles aren't full width for the full heigth (they look mounded - rounded a t the top) the cord calulators might over-inflate these piles a little. Still if it's only 8 cords, that looks like $50 per cord. Not bad.

If you average the height to 2.5 feet from 5 for the large pile and add the small pile it still comes out to about 8 loose stacked cords.

I would probably buy that. Too far to haul it here though.

Assuming the dimensions are at the base of the pile and overall heights (not average heights), it's quite a bit less than 10 cords. It would be 14 cords if it were neatly stacked rectangular piles at those dimensions, but with the wood just sloppily tossed there in mounds, I'd bet it's more like 5-7 cords. With much of it being unsplit and the pile quite deep in places, it's a stretch to call it 'seasoned 1-2 years.' $400 sounds pretty steep to me.

Man that is a $hitload of wood! My back got sore just looking at it! Most of it looks like it has been sitting there a while and could be tough to split if you don't have a hydraulic log splitter.. Have fun!

I'd offer $300 bucks and tell them you'll get it out of there ASAP. That's probably closer to 8 cord as others have said, and well worth the backbreaking work to get it out. I'd be betting that there is a fair share of softer woods in that pile too, but still worth what he's asking.

Heck that is almost two years' worth of wood for me right there. Where else you gonna heat a 3000sq. ft. home for two years for a total of 3-400 bucks?!?

Get yer azz down there and get it!

I appreciate all of the responses. I am going to contact the seller to see what he has to say about the type of woods he thinks are there. Then I'll go check it out today. Luckily I do have a splitter and time since I am over a year ahead on wood.

I'd do it fast. That wood ain't gonna last.......It may be gone already!

I was just down in your neck of the woods last Sunday......Oley Valley, near Fleetwood. Good thing I didn't know about it then, it may have came home with me!!

I put together a spreadsheet to estimate what's there, based on different ways you might describe the shape of the pile. I haven't triple-checked the geometry, but I think it's right.

I based the loose-thrown numbers on Maine's state law (as I found it described on another forum): 180 cubic feet / cord for shorter pieces, 195 cubic feet / cord for longer ones.

IIRC Y'all told me it should be 4-5 cords or so, and my pile was 2' taller.
