In The Woods
Depending on the weather I would like to start this Cherry on Saturday. I'll winch the one down so I can cut it on the ground.

I likes me my cherry, it smells so pretty!;lol I just don't get much of it.

tfdchief, lots of cherry on the lot so we usually burn more cherry each year than any other wood, plan on burning this after two or three years seasoned.

boburban, I have a bad habit of leaving a certain area before I'm done, this will be done by the end of March if not before. This is near the house but I like cutting on our other property the brook runs through, more peaceful.

I have a lot of cherry in the stacks and a lot more down but off the ground in the woods. I am focused on the ash and oak but take the cherry that is easy and will get more in years to come.

What type of wood do you burn the most?

Zap, I burn mostly ash, thanks to the little green monster. I have 6 acres and most of it is ash and the trees are dying at the rate of 5 a year. I also have hackberry and black locust. The property was timbered out years ago so there are only 3 big oaks and one big but ragged walnut and 2 red elm remaining.

I scrounge some red and white oak and about 3 cord of silver maple. In all I have an okay mix of about 10 cord.

Do you have plans on planting other trees? I always thought some red oak would be nice on our property, I'll do it but need another year.

How much snow do you have on the ground to deal with Zap ?

My thoughts too. Quit a bit of snow now to deal with . Eh?
Got it GPS'd or have a trail to it already?

A good 12-18 inches in most spots, more snow in other spots. It snowed again last night (about 2 inches) still snowing... so we keep tacking on each day.

I ran the trail which runs to this cherry so it's not real bad, just have to make sure I clear (shovel) the area I'll be cutting in so I can see what's on the ground, all depends on the temps too.

If I don't work on the cherry, I'll be limbing up some white pine around the house with the pole saw then start burning again in the outdoor fireplace.

Love that Cherry. Quite a bit scattered on parents property.None real big though.Biggest one is around 20" diameter & 60 ft tall in NW corner of acreage, in a semi-protected cove near those 2 clusters of 6 big Basswoods on SE facing slope.About 9 ft straight, then a slight bend for a couple feet & another 4 ft straight section before it forks.Smaller dead limb about 6" is broken off about 20 ft up.Pole saw wont quite reach so I'll either get out the climbing gear or 12ft extension ladder one of these days....

Tree is otherwise healthy so I'll let it stay.Did find 2 smaller dead/damaged ones maybe 75 ft to the SW,right inside the west property fence last week.Biggest one is around 9" & 40' tall & has a vertical split from the ground up almost 6 ft.Other than a small upper limb broken off some years ago,its still growing. But I'll bring it down soon as ground dries out a bit or freezes solid once again....

Already told 2 cousins & Uncle that I'll have a few chunks for their smokers if they want...>>

I don't have much cherry in my stacks this year, hoping to get some this coming summer. One of the best smelling woods IMO.

You have so much wood how can you tell! ==c Since we started burning we always have six cord up, we burn three cord a year, so far mother nature is leaving them standing but we still should be close to have enough cherry to replace what we will burn this year.

I'm thinking of burning more shoulder season wood which should allow us to burn less cherry. We have enough hemlock down we could burn over two cord per year for about 3-4 years, it's just going to rot.

I cut quite a bit of cherry last winter but haven't cut much this year yet. I do have some I could get into just haven't. Ash,sugar maple and hickory this year has been the majority. I have a shag bark that I keep looking at but it's still standing....has about a 30 degree lean so we'll see, she may get the saw or it may go until next year unless it comes down on it's own. I haven't been out for about 2 1/2 weeks and I am jones real bad so I better get after it Sat..

After doing some plowing I stopped by the mess, I'll bring a shovel and a small broom so I can clear the forest floor so I can see what's on the ground before I cut.

Well it looks like I'll get the rest after things thaw out better, I did cut a few rounds then decided to cut down two loads of some old maple that must be 4 years old, it should get us through this week.

Nice work Zap. I was wondering if you would be cutting today. That is some nice size Cherry you have in that pile for the future. I like cutting up those smaller size ones. The stuff is nice and quick to handle.
