I've been looking on Craigslist for an affordable smaller saw for smaller jobs and as a backup to my poulan 5020. I found an 009 posted for $100. The ad says its got a new chain and new rings. It looks pretty well used. It's the white bodied one not the orange

I'm wondering if you guys think this sounds like an okay deal or if I should get him down lower (ill probably try regardless haha) Just wanted the opinions of the experts. Thanks for any input!

009 was an old homeowner quasi top handle saw. Tough little units. For $100? It should be in near mint condition. The solid orange ones were the earlier models.

FWIW: I'd be looking for an 018, MS180, 021 or MS210. Should be able to locate a decent example for $100-$150.

Heck, the MS170 is $159.95 new (IIRC).

Thanks for the opinion. It's certainly not mint so I'd need to talk him down. I found an 020av listed for 100 as well with a dull chain. Opinions?

If you are going to go for one of these older saws, I'd be concerned about what parts are available. Take a glance around the internet and see what kinds are available for the model you're interested on. Sooner, rather than later, you're going to have to fix some little thing. I'd personally get something a little bigger than the old 009.

020AV for a hundred is a deal if it's not beat-up. Dull chain is an easy fix. ;)

To each his own, but those two look like they belong in the Smithsonian Institution down in DC...

The 020 was a great saw, it's actually the predecessor to the modern day limbing saws. That said, I just bought a really nice MS192TC for $130.00.....which is around half the weight of that 020, has a chainbrake (the 020 doesn't), and the parts are easy to find. So, coming from a guy who loves the vintage saws (see my signature below), there's no way I'd pay a hundred bucks for that 020 unless it was near MINT. I wouldn't pay more than 40 bucks for that 009. It was mentioned earlier, they are a homeowner shrub trimming saw........

Yeah I saw that one in my searching Scotty. I found an 024av as we'll for 165 in good condition. I've heard good things about these saws how does the price sound?

That's probably not too bad of a deal either.....

But the 025 has a case and extra chains.......maybe see if the guy with the 024 will come down a little?

I certainly will. Haggling is the most fun part isn't it haha. The 025 is definitely a good deal for someone I'm just heaitant to buy a non running saw because im relatively new to the gas chainsaw world and don't have many repairs under my belt. But maybe it's an easy fix

offer the guy with the 025 75 bucks if it isn't running. But make sure it has compression first. We'll do our best to walk you through the part of getting it running.....

My worry is that the flywheel is siezed. I think I could fix a jammed pull cord but a siezed engine is most likely beyond my skills and budget. Ill ask the guy I he can pull the cover and see if the flywheel will turn or ask if I can do it if I go look

check out the link to the one on Pittsburgh above.....that's a better deal.......two running 025's for $150.00! Shipping shouldn't be more than 40 bucks or so.....

I'd be more inclined to try for that 024AV over a non-running 025. Just sayin'.... ;)

If he take $150 cash, and the saw is in very good shape, you did alright.

Im leaning towards the 024. I also found an 041 farm boss for $150 and an 015av for $100 but I think the 024 will be the best for me

If you are cutting firewood i do not like the "homowner" models. My stihl 170 is extremely lightweight - would not buy another one. Give it some time, you,ll find your deal

I have had one for about 20 years (actually a 009L) and never had a problem with it, just saying, I am sure you can find a better saw for your 100 dollars but they are a tough little saw, and mine gets used every year.
