Warmer temps can't be far off - first Eagle sighting

Some folks rely on those pesky groundhogs for predicting spring. We have nesting bald eagles in the area. The young ones gather near a local lake and migrate south before their elders. The nesting elders return earlier. Saw my first eagle in the sky on the return from our pellet run.

I'll have to hide the cats and wait for warmer temps ... their preferred food is fish.
 
Got a nest a mile and a half down the road from me. I live 2 miles from a lake and across from the river. Funny, we went down there today to check for eagles. Nest is on the river and right near a fish hatchery. Its bigger (as usual) than last year but no sighting yet. I have yet to see them near the house, so dont worry too much about the cats outside and with the abundant river and hatchery, they dont go hungry.

Been watching eaglets grow up and leave home for 3 years now. This will be 4. Very cool to have a front row seat for this every summer. I have had them as close as 20 feet above me on a branch. Love watching them fish in the river. Got fantastic pics a few years ago.
 
Their nesting area is less than 1/2 mile away ... we're on the flight path to the lake. When we first moved here over 20 years ago, was outside unloading the car and heard an odd sound in the quiet. A raven flapping his wings as he flew over head<>
 
Spring? Yeah I'm ready and so is my boy. We'll see the eagles and osprey while were out on the water. I see mid 40's in the upcoming weeks forcast and 50's for the next. Snow's almost gone in the front yard and the boat is soon mobile. Just need the ice to melt. :(
 
Bald eagles have been making a comeback! Lots of them around the lakes up here. When ice fishing I leave the junk fish on the ice for them if I see then around. They love yellow perch and especially northern pike :) One time a couple years ago while ice fishing, I had two flags pulled up a nice bass on the first flag. I had a couple eagles watching me from a tree in at shore so I put my ice scoop on top of the bass and went over to my other trap. Hadn't gone more than 20 feet and the eagle had swooped down for a fly by to take my fish. Instead of the fish though he took off with my ice scoop! Ended up dropping it about 50 yards away. Certainly won't forget that.

Warmer weather can,t come too soon for me ! I am near the southern shore of Lake Ontario in Western NY and my family and I have a sort of informal contest over who will see the first Redwing Blackbird of the year .Feb 28 was among the earliest and with warmer temps on the way I am sure it won,t be long before we have a winner !
 
Bring on spring!
The reality is, the longer it stays cold, the more money that I will make. And even at that, I am ready for warmer temps and sunny days. My summer gets cut short, because come the third week in July, I am working 6 days per week, and come late august, its 7 days/80 hrs per week. So yeah....Let March come in like a lamb and go out like an Easter Bunny, and leave the Lions for December and January! The first week it hits fifty degrees, I take the boats out of the warehouse (when you have a warehouse, come fall, anyone with a boat will be your best friend!!!) and get a good washing and the floor gets washed and swept. Once it hits sixty degrees, I make the joyous transition from Bud Light to Bud Light Lime....that's a really good feeling. C'mon spring!
 
Yeah, READY FOR SPRING! More snow overnight and still snowing :(

Irondequoit Bay or closer to the Falls? I grew up on Grand Island. My sister and her hubby used to moor their sailboat in the bay and did the sail to Toronto a few times.
 
I am a lot closer to the falls .Niagara County actually.I spent many happy afternoons with my kids over at Beaver Island State Park back in the day.Oh yeah and evenings in the spring fishing for bullhead across from Strawberry Island.I grow way too many Heirloom Tomatoes and a group of us have a Tomatotfest party on the Island every year where we exchange seeds and tomatoes near west River Road!
 
We used to live on Staley Road (east) about 1/2 mile from the river... hydroplane races, swimming and water skiing (barefooting in my brother's case). Since I was not as talented as my sibs, I was the driver ... sure miss that little boat 14'7" with 125 hp she danced across the waves :)
 
Years ago my pals and I would get Truck tire inner tubes and shove off from under the South Grand Island bridge and float downstream gulping semi warm beer from 6 packs tied to the tubes .We would get off at Gratwick park in North Tonawanda.I don't think that it is allowed anymore.LOL.

Well as far as I can tell, all the wild life is still in hiding. However, I check the weatherman to decide if I want to plug-in in or not, which is a good sign =)

I remember those days :) I believe the police frown upon that harmless activity these days , with all that boat traffic on the river these days probably get run over.
 
Only cousins left in that area now - was back to Buffalo about three years ago when Uncle was inducted into sports hall of fame.

I haven't been back for several years family comes here for Thanksgiving they like my cooking:)
 
My uncles were inducted in Buffalo as well.One came back from overseas a very different person after the war was over..;)

'Nam? Mom & I had given a lift to a hitchhiker who, a week later, was a sniper on the south Grand Island bridge :eek: Knew nothing about PTSD at the time:(

History of being water babies - ancestors were fishermen and boatbuilders in Scotland, Gram used to swim the Niagara near the Peace Bridge (big current with nasty eddies), her son is George Breen 1500m freestyle '56 & '60 Olympics:)
 
Both of my uncles were WW 2 Vets.One in particular was a mechanical genius.That guy could fix anything with whatever materials were on hand.He would rise thru the Ranks and get busted back down for missbehavior.:rolleyes:
