Need a little help identifying this wood as I'm a little new to the game. Thanks! IDbark.JPGIDround.JPGIDsplit.JPG

The orange under the bark made me say hedge but the split color does not look right. Maybe sassafras. SorryI wasn't much help.

I think sassafras, but smell the split and tell me what you smell.

Yeah, sassafras. Smell like Halls Mentho-Lyptus cough drops? ==c

You're right, it is my new addiction. I don't have a stove yet but can't stop processing wood! So is this sassafras quality wood to burn?

Old timers used to think of sassafras as bad luck. It would pop and crackle and shoot embers out into the room. causing many house fires from an open fireplace. But it is decent firewood. Light but burns well. Makes a lot of quick heat. Great for starting fires and campfire wood. Or in short shoulder wood .

Sassy ain't bad wood, its on the lower end of the BTU spectrum. But has a great smell, both burning and when cutting....
As tigeroak said, its a good shoulder season wood, and you can mix it with really dense wood (like locust hedge and oak).....

Is that your woodstack in your avatar? If so, I'd say you're off to a good start!!

Yup, that's one of them. Have a smaller one started behind it and a cord in the wood shed I built recently.

Somebody's been doing their homework, I see! Excellent stacks, my friend. Love the skid you built to keep the wood off the ground as well.....you'll fit in just done around here....
