For the first time since Halloween and Hurricane Sandy the snapdisk on my insert opened and the fan shut down. The fan was still running when I got up but I heard it stop while I was having coffee. The stove has been hot for over four months without a break. At bedtime last night the house was in the mid 70s and the forecast low was in the upper 40s. Didn't bother with an overnight load.

There are still some hot coals but I pushed them to the back where they don't activate the fan. With all the rain today I might toss a couple of small splits on later.

Another season ends. Total hours of using the boiler for heat: 0.0

Outstanding!

Don't forget to let that boiler get at least a little exercise in the event that an emergency came to be an you needed it.

Or if you happen to leave town at some point.

We've turned on the boiler a few times this winter, but mostly when we were out of town and didn't want the pipes to freeze...

Once a month I turn it on until the radiators start to get warm then shut it down again... It runs 5 to 10 minutes. It is not completely shut down, the thermostat is set at 60° F. This way, if the fires go out, it will take over.

We're sorry for your loss. :)

That warm stove was a good friend all winter long... When the power went out, it was there reliably keeping us warm. That match I used in October to light the stove did us a great service... Now I have to figure out what to do the the rest of the matches and super ceders I bought.

Looking for the right emoticon....looking......looking....ah! there it is ==>:p

In contrast, there were many clicking sounds heard in my house, cries of 'Its hot in here!', clicks from the thermostat most mornings, and my workbench is littered with SuperCedar wrappers (a nod to our sponsors).

Just doing my part for the economy.

Very Nice.

Are you a stay at home person who can fill the stove when needed or may have helpers? I think that stove has a 1.8 cf box, how long can you go between loads? Sounds like your doing awesome, good job.

Congrats! While my stove hasn't been hot all the time, the pilot on my furnace has been out for 2+ years. Almost had a slip-up a few days ago...rain and cold caught me off guard...main stacks were wet and only a few small pieces up by the house. The wife got a fire going with what little dry wood we had, but it wasn't enough to really take the chill off the house. I told her we could turn on the furnace, but she suggested other ways to stay warm during the night, so we went with her suggestion! :)

Nice job, Jaq !!!

We're coming to the end, although we could get hit again.

I had a cord of firewood delivered this past weekend. Nice to now I don't have to burn it this year ;)

How do you empty out the stove and clean the chimney?
Once a week, to clean the stove, I let it get down to just a bed of hot coals. I use a small rake and move the coals to one side, then shovel the ash from the first side. Shift the coals to the other side and clean the rest of the ash. While it is just a pile of coals I wipe the window before I reload. It usually has just a layer of ash.

EDIT ADD: I've been on the roof a couple of times this season and the flue appears to be pretty clean. The screen on the cap has a little build-up but nothing to worry about. Not like the first season with questionable wood. Had to clean the screen once a month.

I do work out of home but get 8 hour overnight burns when I load it with oak. After 8 hours there is a good size bed of hot coals and I just add some small splits, then some full size splits.

I wouldnt button her up just yet, looks like some pretty cold weather coming to the northeast, will be a late spring this year.

Such a good feeling, supplying your own heat!

But the sun is so much stronger now, I don't need the stoves 24/7. Small fires in the morning and around dinner time if it is cold at night. With all the leaves off the trees we get the full benefit of the sun's heat. Thankfully during the summer the canopy of oak leaves protects us from the intense heat of the sun.

Just one thing I don't understand yet. When the stoves are going my wife wants 75° or more. When the AC is on she needs 72° or less... Wish we could reverse those numbers.

Same here

Same here - except mostly maples. Walking off the road and onto the driveway on a hot summer day is like walking into an air conditioned room - the canopy does a fantastic job of keeping things cool. Once the leaves are down late fall, the sun pours in pretty much most of the day and makes a world of difference in temps inside.

Umm... I think that was directed at Corey, not Kapt Jaq. ;)
