Hello, Everyone. After lots of research and inspiration from you good people, I finally got our Santa Fe insert installed yesterday with a pic attached. I also read a lot about the Lux themostats and picked up a 1500E to go with the new insert. The installer was awesome about putting in the Lux to replace the factory t-stat. He spent about 45 minutes with me getting the flame configured, going over the insert's operation and how to best clean it and all.

I have the Lux programmed with a swing setting of three (don't think my wife could handle such a large swing like eight) and, since I work in the basement rec room where the insert is installed four days a week, I have it set to 72 during the day and evening beginning at 8:15am then dropping back to 55 at 11pm at night before coming on at 65 at 6:30am. Probably a really strange interval so if anyone has any suggestions on how to improve that, I'd appreciate it. On weekends, the t-stat is set to 70 at 9am and then to 72 at 6pm when we'll be hanging out in the rec room.

The installer initially had it running on high but I just cranked it down to medium to help reduce the blower noise a bit. The flame height was right at 4" when on high so it's probably dialed-in. We've already burned almost two bags since having it installed at 1pm yesterday but I'm sure it's because I'm still playing around with the settings. We purchased a ton of Turman hardwood pellets - http://www.turmanhardwoodflooring.com/turman-hardwood-pellets.php. I've read a bunch of good reviews on them and the ash coming out is very fine and gray so they appear to be doing the job.

Our home was built in 1957 and is basically a bungalow with a finished basement on one side where the insert is and a shop/laundry room on the other. Our primary heat source is oil although we have natural gas coming in to the place so I'm planning on purchasing a gas insert probably next year for the main floor. Then we also have a finished attic where our master bedroom is. All in all, the house is about 3,200 square feet but the main level is 1,600 square feet. The room where the insert is probably around 525 square feet and it can be closed off. The insulation could be better as well so we're working on that.

Anyhoo, I just wanted to thank you all for the help and inspiration. I've learned a lot and am planning on continuing to do so! If anyone has any additional suggestions and/or insight you can offer, especially with the t-stat programming, I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance and take care!

Regards,
Kory

Holy crap! The same guy must have made our fireplaces!!! Welcome aboard! Your installer probably had it running on high to get all the walls and furnishings up to temperature. It sounds like he knows what he's doing if he dialed in the correct flame height. Now don't forget that adjustment is not a 'set and forget' item. It will change as you change pellet brands and pellet length so be ready to readjust slightly. I've gone from completely open to fully closed, which really isn't closed but as far as it will go.
Don't be surprised it the stove runs for a loooong time trying to recover from that set back to 55 since EVERYTHING in the room will be at 55 degrees. You might be better off letting it run on low all night or at something a little higher. Hey, that's part of the fun of playing with these things. The Sante Fe is a great little stove and very easy to maintain. Being an insert makes it a little more difficult on the long term servicing but it's doable.
Good luck.

Nice looking stove, and the flame looks good! As mentioned above, I wouldn't put the nighttime temp down that low. Just results in such a long recovery time. IMO, I'd set the night time stat setting to 65, and the early morning temp to 68.

Welcome Kory
Lots of fun, fire, fixing and beer here but not in that order

Wow, thanks much for the warm welcome, Y'all. I appreciate it! :)

tjnamtiw, I've been following your posts with great interest since our Santa Fe set-up's are fairly similar. I wouldn't doubt our fireplaces came from the same guy, mantel shelf and all! The installer really knew his stuff and, the store where we bought the insert from, overall, is very reputable. Good thing I'm a tinkerer because I have a feeling I'll be messing with the stove quite a bit just to get it right with various pellet types and all. I haven't touched it in a few hours so maybe there's something wrong with me!

Stovelark, thx much for your kind words. Yeah, the way our fireplace is layed out, I couldn't go with a larger insert since it would stick so far out. It's extremely narrow in the back. Fortunately, there wasn't as much space to heat so the Santa Fe turned out to be the perfect choice for us.

imacman, thx much about the flame! I took your advice and set the temp to 65 at night and 68 early morning as, yeah, since you and tjnamtiw mentioned, it would probably take forever to get up to speed at 55 degrees.

boo boo, actually, now that you mention it, I'm very much a beer geek myself, running a beer blog that I need to get back into after I graduate from school in a few months (been working part-time on my degree after about 10 years!) - http://www.vabeertrail.net/ Looks like you've done the DIY thing so my hat's off to you for sure!

Very nice and welcome to the pellet world. Looks nice and kozy by the fire!

I agree with not dropping the night temps too low. Takes too long to raise the temps when you drop back more than 3 to 5 degree's. Unlike the furnace, A stove doesn't have the raw power to recover quickly. You'll notice it probably won't raise the temps much more than a degree an hour. As it gets colder the amount the stove will raise the temps will also take longer as heat loss gets higher the colder it gets.

Have fun and enjoy the new toy!

Thanks much, jtakeman! Yeah, it's been pretty cozy. My wife and son had a meeting last night and the dog and I enjoyed hanging out by the stove and watching some Netflix. How do you like your Turmans?

I've been thinking about the nightly temperature drop, especially after all the great input you all provided and raised the nightly temperature to 65 and the morning temperature to 68. We'll see how that does as I agree; it would have taken too long to recover after such a drastic drop. Fortunately (or not? :)) it's starting to warm up a bit outside so I may not run it more than a few more weeks, if that.

Y'all have a great weekend!

Has anyone tried to guage pellet consumption lower temperature variation vs. larger?

Glad your warming up there - no such luck here 7F/-14C. Had snow out west so likely to get that too:(

Wow, Lake Girl, that's definitely a cold spell! Good thing you have a good pellet stove to help keep you warm! :)

Thanks much for the excellent feedback, jtakeman. Sounds like I made a good choice going with the Turmans for my first ton!
