I believe it is maple, just not sure of the variety. I got a few wheel barrow loads, but have decided to wait on the truck to gather the rest. Power company in the area aggressively trimmed around the line this winter.

I'm afraid that's Pooplar. OK for short fires or starter wood. 16Mbtu/cord. They say it leaves a lot of ash. I don't know, I haven't burned any to speak of, although it is common here. On the plus side, I think it's supposed to be easy to split and quick to dry. They use it to make furniture.

Is the power company bringing you wood, or was it from close by?

Soooo close to entering the ranks of Cord-hoarder. But alas, I did not quite get enough split today to surpass the wood-a-holic stage. I have it bucked, but that doesn't count. :( My goal this week with longer daylight and less hours working will be to get to the next level.

That, sir, is a HEAP of Norway maple......just about as good as sugar maple in my book.....
But it does take almost two years to be primo. Get all you can, get 'er split and stacked up ASAP. You keep going at this rate and you'll be a woodpile PSYCHO before you know it!!

That explains a lot Scotty, I have some of that seasoned 1 year, I tried burning some last week and no good so I moved onto some cherry, I figured it was some type of maple but didnt realize it took 2 years to season.

Yup, that's gotta be maple. Norwegian maple is like a weed and almost considered invasive. Got lots of here.

Yep it grows like weeds EVERYWHERE round here. I love it for firewood, though. Great stuff, almost as good as sugar maple. makes nice turnings on the lathe, too.....

If it was here.... that ALL would have been fired through contractor's chipper..... Our utility's tree contractors are freaking butchers.....

Makes me sick when I see that. I cut everything (I mean EVERYTHING) that is 2" and bigger up for firewood. Yes, it may be a bit extreme, but those smaller pieces come in really handy for packing the gaps in between the bigger splits, both in the woodstack and in the stove.....

I love having the smaller stuff for morning start-ups, too.....

I take it down between 1 and 2 inches... depending on how tired I am at the time....lol

There's been a few times when the contractor has come through... if I was home... well they would have seen the business end of one of several intimidating "instruments"...

The only thing the power company ever left me is an electric bill. Wood is way better.

all I ever get is my 2 year old hickory saplings reduced to a pile of chips....... I just *LOVE* that

Problem is, Scotty... I had selected those saplings to save... because I *wanted* the trees.... not a pile of ****ing chips. I've got enough hickory... and pear.. and cherry... and apple... saved for the smoker already....

Yeah, doesn't look like poplar to me and I burned an entire 24" tree of that stuff this winter. The entire tree went quick and it did leave a lot of ash. Sweetgum is much worse though. The tell tale sign on poplar is a green heartwood. Sweetgum is almost the same with the heartwood, but it has a really thick bark. Saw an ad on craigslist for 22 logs of sweetgum tonight. Think I am going to pass on it.

I'll agree with the others, it looks like maple in the pics, but like the OP I am no master at figuring out the specific species of maple. Anybody ever seen an iPhone app for tree identification?

How many cords would that be?

I have about 5 in stacks and another ~15 in logs, does that count for anything?

No idea about iPhone apps, There are good android apps for ID by leaves, but haven't found any decent ones going by bark and wood, come on developers get busy

Oops! ;em The bark had me suckered in when I posted. As I kept looking at the pics though, I didn't see that distinct core ring of Poplar and started doubting my ID, but figured someone would be along with the correct ID soon enough...didn't take too long. >> I don't think we have much, if any, Norway here. In fact, the only Maple I see is yard trees; It's an Oak/Ash/Hickory forest here. Once in a while, a volunteer Maple will show up in the woods...seed carried in by birds, wind or whatever.

Got excited a couple weeks ago when I saw a tree co. truck loaded with wood, less than a mile from the house...until I saw it was Sweetgum. :(

lol - sounds like me a couple months ago. Saw an entire log truck of poplar and sweetgum. King of amazed that I had no desire for the wood whatsoever.

Has to be good to have a ton of oak, hickory, and ash. Have yet to try any hickory or ash, but have a ton of oak on hand right now. Going to be out getting more on April 16th.
