;lol
You oughta see my one buddy. You think I'm bad, he's totally NUTS. I tried to talk him into joining this site but he won't. He does some creeping on here from time to time.

Also have access to 100 acres that was timbered, whole place is covered with tops and ugly trees. Haven't ventured into there yet but will likely hit that this summer.

I get all of my wood from a buddy 30 min north of me. He has horses on an old tree farm so he is constantly cleaning out dead trees. He asks all his friends but no one ever comes up once he tells them they have to cut and split it. Works out great for me since I can cut it and split it to the size and length I want. Most of his trees are mulberry and soft maple with some pine and maybe a few ash. If I get into any real dead or punky stuff he tells me to leave it and he burns it up with all the brush in bonfires throughout the summer. Been doing this for 4 years and still have many more years of dead standing trees to get.

Get out of my head, dude. Really.

Shesh. We're working a windfall scrounge. The guy skids out the logs and even holds them on the forks when needed, helps us load the rounds and helps buck too. AND we get to use his trailer. We get all the good stuff, he's keeping the punky stuff to give to/sell to a mulch guy. The bonus for him is that he gets his lot cleaned up.

I am fortunate in that I have never had to go more than a 15 minute for my firewood.

It takes more than 15 minutes, by foot or by tractor to get to the edge of my family's land.... It'd take me 5 years with a feller buncher to cut it all....

Yup. funny thing is, it was on CL for a few weeks before we found it. Why? It's mostly scots pine. Silly people that won't burn it-they make me VERY happy. Most of our free stuff is pine. This guy will burn it at least, it's just more wood that he'll use since they don't heat with it.

I know, as a land owner... while I know what the value of certain items are.... sometimes I just want them gone..... and I don't have the time to make it happen....

so... if if someone is willing to expend the energy to take what I want gone... for that same item... works for me.

I think that the amount of work we are willing to do to get wood is related to our access to wood over the course of the year. For example, if I lived in a rural area where there may be some logging going on and I have access to cut offs, crotches, uglies etc,and a neighbor offered me half of some trees hes had cut down if I do all the work, I would definitely say no unless it was a really easy score. But if you live in my area, where stacked cords sell for $225-$300,and I have to compete with many other scroungers, then sometimes a 50/50 deal is not that bad if its fairly easy and I dont have to deal with brush and clean up.
