I was recently going through a Harbor Freight flyer and I came across a 20 ton arbor press for $199....Any way at all to convert this to a 20 ton log splitter...think about it...

I have a 20 ton press in my shop. To use it for firewood would be mind-numbing because of how slow the cycle times would be.

You could post on hearth.com between splits; At least you would be getting something done while you loaf away the day... ==c

Heck how can I turn my 28 ton splitter into an apple press?

I'm already working on that one ;) The grinder/crusher is what has me stumped.

My ram comes off with two pins...going to make the hoses longer and build an arbor press frame out of some oak 4x6's I milled last fall.

Catch pan under that slopes and funnels into bucket.

At least that's the thinking right now...also considered a pneumatic over hydraulic cylinder. Will come down to which I can do cheaper.

What about a cast iron cylinder with a spicket use the same head and use a round that fits the cylinder. With something to keep the round from splitting?

Gonna start a new thread. Don't wanna hijack this one any further. Headin' for the DIY forum.

I've wondered the same thing Jay but I'd rather everything was kept more to the clean standards of food grade so instead of the splitter, we built a press.

Honestly, if ya don't like using a maul or axe, you'd be waaay better off just buying one of these. Relatively inexpensive and you still get some excersize........

yeah, I have yet to see any really good tools come from Harbor Freight....but does the tool work? worst case scenario, you could get a local welding shop to put a REAL weld on that area....

I even though about fabricating my own version of this slider splitter, something my wife could use to get some excersize.......NO, I'M NOT INSULTING HER, EITHER.....she's the one who wants to help out some this summer!!

Lots of money there very nice.

Not too bad Jay. We bought the hardware and had the wood already. Just a matter of cutting and fitting and staining. Then waiting a couple years before being able to use it because of lack of apples.

Dennis, where did you get the hardware (screw press, hopper, flywheel, etc)? Was that stuff expensive?

What wood did you make the press and bucket out of? Kinda looks like ash in the pics.....

*edit* I see in the close up it's oak.......duh.....

We bought the hardware from this company: https://www.happyvalleyranch.com/ I don't remember the price so would have to look that up. The wood is oak.

You are right Jay, that could look nice in a home. It is in our barn though.

It does work very nice. I will admit I pound on it pretty hard. Its now my goal to break one every 1-2 cords. Lol

I think the 2nd post derailed everyone. You said ARBOR press, and as I know them to be the rack & pinion type that makes me think you might be on to something. I wonder what the input (you) would have to be to create the 20 ton? The other thing is a tall enough opening for firewood, they all seem to be much to short.
