My friend found a Jotul F600 on CL for $600. It looks to be in great shape and is not a far ride to go pick it up. The seller does not know the age as the stove was there 3 years ago when she moved in. Questions:

Is $600 good for the F600?
Are they good stoves?
Should we be looking at any specific areas of concern when picking it up?

Any other feedback is welcomed!

Maybe you can get some more answers by posting the CL ad, is it this one? http://longisland.craigslist.org/hsh/3688528454.html

I don't believe that is it. I think he's just getting the stove, no pipe, etc..

I'm pretty sure that if it's in great shape, $600 is a steal. If it needs new gaskets, it is probably still a good price. Don't drag your feet.

Jotul makes fine products.

Agreed, snooze ya lose. Tell her you are coming right over. If you have a smart phone, bring it and post some shots while there. Inspect the grate and surrounding base area in interior closely for cracks.

If you are still here reading this, you are gonna miss out on a pretty darned good deal.

Look for the obvious signs of over fire. Give it a good visual inspection and then hand her the money and load it up.

This is the stove. It has secondary burn tubes and has no cracks or warps... But look at the front enamel?

He's gettin it for $500... Is this just cosmetic?

He's going to send me more pics to post when he gets there. Thanks for the feedback BE and jags, can always count on you guys.

Be aware that enamel "repair" ain't gonna happen at home. Nothing stopping a person from cleaning it off and repainting. But to re-enamel - that is a deal breaker.

He was going to clean the entire thing and reliant with white stove paint, should I advise againg the purchase?

Not if he is aware of it already. Just didn't want him to get it home and then start to google "enamel repair"

Ok. Thanks Jags.

Could he sand areas to level out missing enamel holes and paint it all? Or try to remove all enamel?

Is the picture reversed? If not it looks like an F500 Oslo with the side load door on the left.

The stove could be painted by sanding the enamel to give it tooth, or better yet have it shot blasted down to the metal.

I'm not sure how the picture was taken, that is what I recieved from my buddy. I'm guessing its safe to tell him that if everything looks good when he goes, 500 may be. Good deal?

I love the Jotul stoves, if I part ways with my Hearthstone, I'll def get a Jotul.

Yeah, I'm thinking this is an Oslo. Still an F500 for $500 is not a bad deal if not abused. Examine the secondary rack closely for warping too.

He could, but that ol girl has alot of curves and that enamel isn't going to sand very easy. A bead blast might be the best option, although not free unless he has the equipment.

Thought the F600 has double doors on the front?

Yes, the F600 is a double door. I also think this stove is the F500 Oslo.

It is definitely the Jotul Oslo F 500. Even with the enamel in such bad shape I'd think anything around $500 is quite a bargain if the stove hasn't been over fired and damaged in some way. I don't think it will be possible to make the stove look like new without spending quite a lot of money on redoing the finish. I have a Jotul F 600 with the Mojolica Brown Porcelain Enamel finish and I don't see how that finish could be removed by the consumer. I have to wonder what that stove has gone through to mess up the enamel so badly? It would be a great stove to put in a basement where it's not going to be so visible like it might be in a living room. You could touch up the enamel in that sort of setting and without real good lighting it would probably look okay.

I'm sorry to say but it looks really bad and old, if its for a garage, I'd say offer 250. It's abused on the outside, it must be abused on the inside. Buyer beware. JMHO
You can get that home and end up real sorry, it's a gamble
I'm sure she is thinking " I just want to get rid of this junk"
