In The Woods
After getting sick of limbing up those downed Hemlock I cleared the trail to this Beech on the side of the hill above the bowl, it's been down for a couple of years so there is some punk on the outside of some of the rounds.

The deer were in the area when I was working so I grabbed some pics. The trail going up is all ice in certain spots so I'm hoping next weekend I can start hauling this chit down.

Pic 6963 is another Beech down from where I was working.

Looks like you had a productive day Zap......That beech will serve you well in the cold weather. My friend and I worked on some of the area that was logged. Drug out a lot of red oak with the tractor. I whacked my toe though so I may be down and out for awhile. Starting to think I broke something but I'll probably suffer through the weekend as I don't want to go anywhere near the emergency room on the holiday weekend usually have some very unpleasant people during that time.

I hope your toe is ok, must hurt.

Zap, all those piles will add up quick............been busy myself in the woods getting as much done as I can before all the green pops out.

We look at most beech as cull trees on our farm as it has such a low log value and has a tendency to out compete more desirable species in low light conditions. It does make nice firewood. Hated it as a kid because we split by hand.

Yes they do Tim, I might add a few topped off Cherry to those piles today.

I just grab the downed stuff, we leave the standing Beech for the deer unless it's damaged.

The deer and my fences don't get along so deer are viewed as culls also. Around here deer are just one more reason for folks to trespass. Most beech I have seen on the ground on our farm weren't worth cutting. What I find down the most is aspen and it just gets lopped and left for fertilizer. I will drag the occasional hemlock blowdown out and put it on the sawmill.
